When Your People Turn On You
In this sermon, we explore the profound question of faithfulness in the face of betrayal and abandonment, especially from those closest to us. Using the story of Job, we see how his friends turned against him, questioning his integrity and faith. We delve into the harsh words of Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar, who represent the pressures of societal expectations and the temptation to abandon God’s truth for human wisdom. Job’s response to their accusations highlights the importance of staying anchored in God’s word and turning to Him when our closest relationships fail us.
We discover that Job, despite losing everything, remained resolute in his faith, declaring, "I know that my Redeemer lives" (Job 19:25). This declaration serves as a powerful reminder that when our people turn on us, we must turn to the One who stands above our struggles. The sermon emphasizes that true comfort and identity come from God, not from the fleeting approval of others. As we navigate our own challenges, we are encouraged to embrace our faith and extend grace to those around us, fostering a community that welcomes the broken and points them to Christ, our ultimate Redeemer.

· Would you stay faithful to your faith
· if everyone turned on you?
· Would you stay faithful to your faith
· if your family turned on you?
· Would you stay faithful to your faith
· if everyone you loved, everyone around you turned on you?
· Hey, if you got your Bibles,
· if you are new here, my name is Kyle Gallagher.
· I am the youth pastor here at Cross Church.
· If you got your Bibles, open up to Job 15.
· That's where we're gonna spend our time this morning.
· And if you don't have one, grab a friend, read with them,
· or grab a Bible right in front of you,
· right underneath that chair.
· We love diving into God's word.
· But as you guys are flipping there,
· I wanna give you guys some stats.
· I wanna show you some numbers this morning.
· A recent study was done on kids
· from the ages of 11 to 13.
· And this is what they found about this study.
· 50% live with both of their biological parents.
· 31% live with a single parent.
· 17% live in a blended family.
· 2% live in some other situation.
· Worldwide, only 7% of children
· live in a single parent homes.
· And here's the biggest one.
· They found that kids in the United States
· are more likely to live with a single parent
· than anywhere else in the world.
· Why does that matter?
· Why do I bring that up this morning?
· Because we are the leaders of the entire world
· that kids will grow up in a broken home.
· Kids will grow up.
· And this is the reality of living in a single parent house.
· Why does that matter?
· Why do I bring that up?
· Because we need to know as parents,
· as pastors, as grandparents, as faithful church members,
· we need to know the culture we are living in right now.
· This is not a future thing.
· This is the culture we live in today.
· And we need to actually acknowledge
· who is sitting next to us today.
· Who is sitting in the chair next to you.
· Where our teenagers are at, where our families are at.
· And how are we gonna walk alongside them in this mess?
· How are we gonna be alongside them in this?
· Guys, I work with teenagers every single day
· and right now these questions that they are asking
· is that this isn't the life I want.
· They're asking these questions.
· How does God fit in my life?
· Man, how did my home get so broken right now?
· What happened right now?
· Translation, our children are being affected
· by our choices.
· As culture, we have turned away from God
· and what God has designed the family to be.
· We have compromised our homes
· and we have turned what God already called beautiful.
· We've turned away from that.
· And guys, don't hear me say this,
· like if you have one of these homes right now,
· if your home is broken, you've been through a divorce,
· you have a blended family right now,
· if you are raising your kid as a single parent,
· hear me say this, you have not failed.
· That is why we have the cross.
· That is why we have Jesus Christ
· because you can turn back to him
· and you can get on the right path.
· But church, hear me say this.
· We do need to get on the right path.
· We do need to turn the tide here in America
· and we do need to do it for the sake of Gen Alpha
· and Gen Z right now.
· So let me ask you a couple of questions this morning.
· Would you stay faithful to your faith
· if everyone turned on you?
· Would you stay faithful to your faith
· if your family turned on you?
· Would you stay faithful to your faith
· if everyone you loved, everyone around you turned on you?
· See, this morning we're gonna learn about Job,
· that what if wasn't a what if, it was his exact reality.
· Chapters 15 through 21 is where we're gonna spend
· this time right now.
· And for the last five weeks,
· we've been answering this big question
· is not why things happen, but who is already there?
· Who is already there?
· And Job's life fell apart.
· The first conversation we saw Eliphaz,
· he told him, you must have done something wrong, Job.
· The second conversation he had with Bildad
· is that, man, he said that nobody's there
· to speak for you.
· Then the third one, Zophar, we learned about last week
· is that just say you're sorry Job
· and everything will be okay.
· That was the friend approach.
· And now we're gonna get around two of their conversations.
· Same three people, same as sheep right here, right now.
· But their words get harsher with Job.
· They get more direct with Job.
· They turn to him and they attack his faith.
· We're gonna watch three conversations
· and I think exactly exposes the numbers
· I shared with you today.
· It exposes what's going on in the American home today
· because the hardest turns don't happen out there.
· The hardest turns happen in our four walls,
· right here in this house,
· right here with us, our closest people.
· So here's my big question tonight that I wanna answer
· or today I wanna answer.
· When your people turn on you,
· will you let them turn you?
· When your people turn on you, will you let them turn you?
· Let's read verses 11 and 17.
· Eliphaz, he kicks it off and he says in 11,
· are God's consolations not enough for you?
· Even the words that deal gently with you, he says.
· Then you skip down to verse 17 and he says this,
· listen to me and I will inform you.
· I will describe what I have seen.
· See, the first point I want you to see is this,
· is that some people, man, they're gonna turn you
· from God's word and they're gonna turn you to their word.
· Look at those first two verses
· that Eliphaz speaks right here.
· He says, man, isn't God's comfort enough for you?
· Job, isn't God's words enough for you?
· But listen to what's underneath Eliphaz's words,
· God's comfort, he means his own speech.
· He is calling his own words God's words.
· See, the Hebrew word right here is listen.
· The Hebrew word is Shema.
· It's the word in Deuteronomy 6-4, it says listen Israel.
· The Lord our God, the Lord is one
· and it's the word God uses,
· call his people to hear him.
· Eliphaz says this about himself, Shema, listen to me.
· So here's the big thing right here.
· He even brings back up right here
· in verses 18 and 19, he says, man,
· listen to these wise men of our time, Job.
· He reflects on these wise men
· that are in their land right now
· that these wisdom thinkers have been passed down
· to their fathers, to their children, ancient wisdom,
· they're above debate.
· And in verse 19, he says this,
· the land belonged to them.
· No stranger passed through the land
· without going through them.
· They know everything that is going on in their land.
· So here's the translation of what Eliphaz is saying.
· Job, we're the insiders, you're the stranger.
· He puts them right on the outside.
· And guys, we have wise men all the time around us.
· We have wise men right now today.
· They just come in the form of a podcast, a ring light.
· They string these phrases together
· that you've constantly heard through a reel,
· a 60 second reel, maybe a phrase like this,
· follow your hearts, protect your peace.
· I love this one.
· Students and young generation are all about this one.
· I'm gonna live my truth, right?
· We hear that all the time in our culture today.
· These messages that have been stringed together,
· stitched together, they've been around so long
· that now we have taken them as truth.
· See, the algorithm has become people's pastor
· more than the church.
· The algorithm has become the people's pastor.
· And that pastor preaches to you
· when you wake up in the morning
· and before you go to bed at night.
· That's the first thing we check.
· That's the first thing that we look at.
· That's the last thing we look at when we go to bed.
· We all have our phones connected to us.
· But here's what the algorithm does.
· The algorithm never once tells you to deny yourself
· and pick up your cross.
· So let me ask you a couple of things right here.
· Do you think God's comfort is not good enough for you?
· Do you think God's counsel is not good enough for you?
· Do you think man's word is better than God's word?
· Do you listen to your podcast?
· Do you listen to your news?
· Do you listen to their information
· more than what God's word says?
· Do you have that self-help book
· that's on your nightstand instead of the Bible?
· I feel like we should sing the Dusty Bible song
· by Josiah Queen right now, right?
· But look at what Job does right here.
· Job doesn't make that trade.
· Chapter 16-2, he says this.
· You are all miserable comforters.
· That's how he starts out with that.
· Pretty intense, right?
· He even gets the, you know, better, right?
· He even lays out his facts of what he is feeling.
· Look at that 15 through 17,
· what he says to his friends.
· I have sewn sackcloth over my skin.
· I have buried my strength in the dust.
· My face, my face has grown red with weeping,
· although my hands are free from violence
· and my prayer is pure.
· I love these verses.
· They're honest, they're real.
· It's exactly what's going on with Job.
· You read in 17-6, Job describes that
· when people look at him, they spit on him.
· He's disgusting to look at.
· And still through all of this,
· Job chooses not to give into Eliphaz's words.
· Still through all this, Job chooses God's word.
· He chooses his word that's gonna feed him
· every single day.
· Guys, your phone will feed you every single day,
· but it will still leave you starving.
· The algorithm tells you exactly what you want.
· Jesus tells you exactly what you need to hear.
· And most of us won't have a cost
· of somebody spitting in our face.
· Most of us won't have a cost
· of what Job writes for you right here
· that people won't spit on us,
· but our price is gonna be comfort.
· Our price is gonna be,
· oh man, I'm not included with that group.
· I'm not included with that social media tag.
· Or hey, I'm a stranger to them.
· I'm the outcast, I'm the black sheep.
· That's gonna be our price.
· See, a lot of Christians don't understand this
· about leaving a false faith.
· Most of you in this room know
· that I came from a Mormon background.
· I was born and raised Mormon.
· I was atheist living in this Mormon house.
· And I actually went on my mission
· for two and a half years in Chile
· and I absolutely loved it.
· It was great.
· I found Jesus, the real Jesus
· that's preached about in this Bible.
· I put the Book of Mormon in the Bible side by side
· and I decided, hey, I'm gonna find out who Jesus was.
· And I came to my faith.
· I came to Christ through his word.
· But I had to come to a reality when I got home.
· I said, okay, I'm ready to leave the Mormon faith
· and I got to make Christianity my lifestyle.
· I got to make Christianity my way of life.
· And so when I declared that to my family,
· I was kicked out.
· When I declared that to the church,
· I was brought before a council of men
· that I was born and raised with.
· They knew me from every sense.
· I was a little guy.
· And they put me in front of a council
· and I had to defend my faith to them.
· See, most of us Christians,
· we can cuss out Pastor Andrew
· and we're still invited the next weekend, right?
· But in the Mormon faith,
· if you go up against their word,
· if you go up against the Bible and their Bible
· and you show them who the real Jesus is,
· they say, get out of the church.
· You're no longer a part of it.
· They excommunicate you.
· So my cost was giving up my community
· that I knew ever since I was a little boy.
· My cost was defending my faith
· in front of my family
· and constantly going through the heap
· and being disregarded
· and then eventually cast out
· where I'm no longer a welcome in that church.
· See guys, Eliphaz went for Job's heart,
· but Bildad, man, he goes even deeper.
· He goes about his name.
· Look at these verses in 18 through 17.
· 18 through 17.
· I'm just gonna read 17 right here.
· It says, all memory of him perishes from the earth.
· He has no name anywhere.
· And look at verse 21.
· He delivers this killer blow to him.
· Indeed, such is the dwelling of the unjust man.
· And this is the place of the one who does not know God.
· See, Bildad reveals something to us
· is that some people will turn you away from his name
· and turn us to their name.
· See, this is interesting.
· When you look at this,
· you guys gotta understand Job's world right here.
· Most people in Job's world believe you live after death
· through your kids, through your grandkids.
· Being remembered through your kids
· and your grandkids was better,
· was how they needed to live life.
· To be forgotten was worse than dying.
· Having your children around you
· and have them live on your name
· was more important to them.
· But these two verses,
· right before Bildad gets into this,
· he says a wicked man has no children, no descendants.
· And he says it to a man
· that just buried 10 of his kids.
· Guys, we do the same thing.
· We measure our name by our house.
· We measure our name by our career.
· We measure our name about how well our kids are doing.
· Man, are their grades good?
· Is travel ball good?
· Man, are they having a scholarship?
· Are they getting married well?
· Man, if our kids look good,
· then we must be doing something right.
· Then we must be doing something great.
· So let me ask you a couple questions.
· Are you scared?
· Are you scared that your name won't be remembered?
· Are you more concerned
· with where you dwell on this side of heaven?
· Is your house and where you live more valuable
· than who is speaking in your home?
· Is your family, the family vacations that you go on
· more important than where you spend your time
· at the dinner table or in a back porch
· or even on the couch with your kids?
· And here's the big one.
· What if your kids end up leaving
· and they turn against you?
· What if your kids end up walking away from their faith?
· See, look at these verses right here,
· in 13 through 19.
· Chapter 19, 13 through 19.
· It says this.
· This is Job speaking.
· He has removed,
· he has removed my brothers from me.
· My acquaintances have abandoned me.
· My relatives stopped coming by
· and my close friends have forgotten me.
· My house guests and female servants
· regard me as a stranger.
· I am a foreigner in their sight.
· I call for my servant, but he does not answer.
· Even if I beg him with my own mouth,
· my breath is offensive to my wife
· and my own family finds me repulsive.
· Even young boys scorn at me.
· When I stand up, they mock me.
· All of my best friends despise me
· and those I love have turned against me.
· Everything in Job's life is falling apart.
· His brothers left him, his relatives left him,
· his closest friends left him.
· Verse 17 says that his wife
· can't even stand to be near him.
· Job loved his wife.
· Remember chapter two?
· Chapter two, it says that man, his wife was near him,
· but when things got rough, she said,
· hey, curse God and die, Job.
· You ever been in a marriage argument?
· I hope that never comes out of your wife's mouth, okay?
· But to be fair to her, she buried the same 10 kids.
· She's broken too.
· She's struggling in this moment too.
· Job poured everything he had into his whole world,
· everything he had into his wife
· and she still ended up leaving him, turning away from him.
· Bill Dad never says this part out loud.
· The home you put your security in, Job,
· it turned on you.
· The kids you put everything into, they walked away.
· It walked away from you.
· The spouse that you built everything around,
· she ended up leaving you too.
· That's why all throughout scripture,
· God keeps reminding us and he keeps asking
· this one question, will you choose me first?
· All throughout scripture, Jesus says this
· and I love how Jesus puts it the best.
· In 1037, he says this and Jesus says,
· the one who loves a father or mother more than me
· is not worthy of me.
· The one who loves a son or daughter more than me
· is not worthy of me.
· Husbands, wives, future husbands and wives, parents,
· hear me say this, God commands you to love
· every single person in your life.
· But God says, do not put your ultimate hope in them
· that will eventually fail you.
· Put your ultimate hope in God that will never fail you.
· Guys, this world is broken
· because people kept putting their faith in the wrong thing.
· People are putting their faith in the wrong places.
· The numbers I read to you this morning are real.
· This is our reality we are living in.
· And loving God doesn't mean everything
· gets cleaned up in your life.
· Loving God doesn't mean everything falls into place.
· Job loved God, Job loved him
· and everything fell apart in his life.
· But he does promise if you do love me
· when things do fall apart, you won't fall apart with it.
· So we need to get real this morning
· and that's exactly what Job does.
· Look at verse 21, he says, have mercy on me friends.
· Have mercy on me my friends.
· He is asking for mercy from the very closest people to him
· and they won't give it to him.
· So he stays glued to the name that has mercy.
· He stayed glued to the name
· that speaks mercy in his life.
· I'm reminded about a story
· when I was going through my hard time.
· I'm ex-communicated from the church.
· I got no family around me.
· I was homeless for a little bit.
· I started getting my feet underneath me.
· I started dating my beautiful wife.
· She was my girlfriend at the time.
· Now we're married.
· We have four kids, it's an amazing thing.
· But during this time as I was dating her,
· I hit up my boy that I grew up with in high school
· and this is Josh and his beautiful wife
· here on the screen.
· And I hit up Josh and I was like,
· Josh, I need to talk to you.
· So we went out to dinner
· and after dinner, I started to explain to Josh.
· I was like, Josh, I don't know
· if I can keep doing this, man.
· I don't know if I can keep doing this thing called God.
· I don't know if he cares about me.
· I don't know if he loves me.
· I don't even know if he's real anymore.
· And Josh looked at me and he said, Kyle, don't give up.
· Kyle, God does love you.
· He does care about you.
· Keep fighting the good fight.
· See, Josh didn't make a name for himself in that moment.
· He pointed to me a name that is above all names,
· the name of mercy that he pointed me to.
· He spoke life and truth into me there.
· See, Eliphaz attacked his word,
· Bildad went to his name,
· but Zophar, he goes even way deeper than that.
· Zophar attacks his heart.
· Look at these verses in 24 through five.
· It says this,
· don't you know, Job,
· whatever sense antiquity from the time
· a human was placed on earth,
· the joy of the wicked has been brief
· and the happiness of the godless has lasted only a moment.
· And then look at the final verse
· that he says right here to Job.
· He says this in 29,
· this is the wicked person's lot from God,
· the inheritance God ordained for him.
· See, the third point is this,
· is that some people are gonna turn you away
· from God's heart
· and they're gonna turn you to their hearts.
· Look at these verses again.
· He's basically saying this, Job, your heart loves evil.
· Job, you are going to inherit death.
· Says this to his face.
· Andrew literally said that to me last week.
· He's like, do you even believe God?
· What do you believe?
· And then I replied, can you even grow a real mustache?
· When you guys read this,
· God revealed this to me last night
· as I was rehearsing.
· There's in chapter 20, verse 20,
· chapter 20, verse 20,
· when 2020 hit,
· I think this identifies exactly what happened to our world
· because his adipatite is never satisfied.
· What do you hunger for in your heart?
· What are you trying to inherit in your heart?
· When I read that, man, I looked at our world
· and I looked at like, what's going on in our lives?
· What's going on in my life?
· Man, for a long time, we've been chasing thrills.
· We've been chasing cheap thrills,
· all that our world offers.
· We have this hungry appetite
· of constantly chasing these fleshly desires in us.
· And we see this all the time through our reels.
· We see this all the time through their wisdom
· that they give us.
· Galatians 5, 19 through 21 actually warns us about this.
· If we continue to chase after our desires in our life,
· we will not inherit the kingdom of God.
· Colossians 3, 8 through 10, it says this.
· It goes through a deeper labor.
· Put off all those old self and put on a new self
· that is being renewed day by day
· to the image of your creator.
· See, Zophar's not wrong about the sin.
· He's wrong about Job.
· That was never Job's heart.
· That was never what Job was pointing to.
· Go back to 19 real quick.
· This is what Job says before Zophar even gets here.
· He says this 25 through 27,
· but I know that my Redeemer lives.
· And at the end, he will stand on the dust.
· Even after my skin has been destroyed,
· yet I will see God in my flesh.
· I will see Him myself.
· My eyes will look at Him and not as a stranger.
· My heart longs within me.
· That's Job's heart.
· And so Job, go back to 21.
· Look what he says to Zophar.
· He says this 23 through 26.
· He says this.
· One person dies in excellent health,
· completely secure and at ease.
· His body is well fed and his bones are full of marrow.
· Yet another person dies with a bitter soul
· having never tasted prosperity.
· But both lie in the dust and worms cover them.
· It doesn't matter if you're a good person
· or a bad person.
· We're all going to the same dust.
· Or Joey from Friends would say,
· we're all gonna be eaten by worm food, okay?
· Guys, we're all going to the same dust,
· but the difference is one will have a Redeemer
· above their dust, the other will not have a Redeemer.
· Who are you longing for?
· Who are you truly longing for in your life?
· What are you truly longing for in your life?
· Job says that your heart is gonna be revealed
· day after day in every part of your life.
· But Job shows us how to look at someone else.
· Job shows us how to turn our heart
· towards God in all situations.
· No matter who loves you, no matter who's around you,
· you always stay connected to Jesus.
· And Jesus warned us.
· Jesus warned us that this life following him
· would not be easy.
· It is gonna be a struggle every single day of our life.
· So at this time,
· when I'm going through all my struggles,
· Josh speaks life into me.
· I'm still struggling with God.
· I'm still wrestling with things with God.
· This is probably the loneliest I've ever been in my life.
· So I'm from California,
· so I took off to my old surf spot in Santa Monica.
· And I love this spot.
· And this night was unique.
· For some reason, I was there in the middle of the night,
· got there like two or three a.m. in the morning.
· It's a full moon out there.
· I can see the waves crashing.
· I'm just overlooking this cliff.
· The blue light's just shining.
· And I'm yelling at God to the top of my lungs.
· I'm like, God, give me a break.
· Who's around?
· I'm like, you don't even love me.
· You need to show up right now.
· I'm just yelling to the top of my lungs.
· All the rich people are probably like,
· this crazy homeless kid is just like,
· yelling at the sides, you know?
· Like, just like, it's totally my job moment.
· And I remember after the anger sat,
· and then I just stop and everything's silence.
· This is how Jesus appears to me.
· Jesus gives me this verse.
· How you will be hated by everyone because of my name,
· but the one who endures to the end will be saved.
· Thanks, Jesus.
· That meant a lot.
· After this happened, God started to reveal Himself to me.
· God started to reveal about who my family needs to be.
· It was my church family.
· The church that I would do life with every single day.
· The church I would drop my kids off
· in kids ministry every single Sunday.
· My Bible group that I would just explain my heart
· and be vulnerable in a moment.
· God says, that's the family I need you to have, Kyle.
· And I love my church family in this room.
· I love how these people have blessed my wife.
· I love how these people have blessed all of my kids.
· Ms. Vicki that always in the cafe,
· she knows exactly what Cody wants every single Sunday.
· You want your usual?
· Yes, ma'am.
· Guys, that is the church.
· That is the church that I see
· in every single one of your lives.
· That God keeps revealing to me the same Christ
· that saved me a long time ago also saved you.
· And you are willing to make that unified in our church.
· Grace and mercy, the gospel of Jesus Christ unifies us.
· Guys, my heart is for that.
· My heart is that we have a church
· that is full of grace and mercy.
· That shows the heart of Jesus everywhere we look.
· Guys, families are a mess.
· It is no longer a future thing.
· Families are a mess and they have turned away
· from the beautiful things
· that God has already put in front of them.
· They have taken the bite.
· They have taken the bait of sin.
· They say, God's not enough.
· His counsel is not enough.
· God's name isn't enough.
· God's heart isn't for me.
· But I know a church that is willing to be the change.
· I know on the corner of 175th and Bell,
· we are being the welcoming door of all their brokenness.
· I don't wanna grow a church by already saved Christians.
· I wanna grow a church by broken people that became saved
· because we all pointed him to the healing one
· that is Jesus.
· That is how I wanna grow a church.
· That is my heart.
· Andrew revealed his heart in one of his sermons.
· I'm gonna reveal my heart.
· And I pray this all the time in all my ministries.
· I hope we have a heart of grace and truth.
· I hope we have a heart of grace and mercy
· that always points back to a redeemer
· that died on a cross for us.
· I hope that when people come through these doors,
· they see this man that was broken
· and he became the redeemer we all need in our life.
· He became the redeemer Job needed.
· He became the redeemer you need right now.
· Church, I got a couple more self-reflections for you.
· Which redeemer is standing above your problems,
· your struggles and your misery today?
· Which redeemer is standing above you?
· When all the dust settles,
· which redeemer is standing above the dust?
· Who is the name that is coming out of the dust?
· This is what it looks like this week.
· When their words can't feed you, turn to Jesus' words.
· When their name forgets you,
· when your name is forgotten, turn to His name.
· When their hearts turn on you, turn to His heart.
· Church, your enduring truth is this.
· When your people turn on you,
· turn to the one who stood above the dust.
· Some of you are lost in here tonight
· and some of you are lost in this moment
· and you've got a bunch of dust in your life
· that you needed taken off.
· There is a savior named Jesus Christ
· that will wash your dust away.
· Dust off.
· Today's your day.
· Today's your day to give your life to Christ.
· But you believers in the room
· and most of you are believers in this room,
· are you willing to be a welcoming door
· to all the dusty people coming in here?
· This last year before we went to camp,
· I told my leaders that I wanna leave the 99
· and I wanna go chase the one.
· I want us to be a ministry and student ministry
· that we gonna pray for dusty people
· to come in our ministry.
· We're gonna pray for messy people to come in our life.
· And I got really good at praying
· because God gave us a bunch of messy students
· in our ministry right now and it's been great.
· But church, I want that to be your heart.
· I want you to pray for messy people
· to come in your life.
· Don't hide in your bubble.
· Don't hide in your circles.
· Pray for dust to come in.
· Because Jesus was the greatest person
· to get down on his knees and to wash our feet.
· Jesus was the greatest redeemer that we all need.
· And we need to embrace the dust
· that walks through those doors.
· And then we need to pray for them to come in here
· and to know who is going to heal them in the end.
· Be that welcoming door to all those dusty people
· in your life.
