· In Job 28, 21, wisdom is hidden from you, but in Colossians chapter two,

· wisdom is hidden in him and the difference is it's hidden in the

· God man who has been revealed to us.

· And this is our enduring truth this morning.

· The thing that we get to practice and live out is wisdom is not

· hidden from you, it is revealed in Jesus Christ.

· And if you have your Bible, go ahead and grab it and open it and

· flip to Job chapter 28.

· If you don't have a Bible, you can grab the one in the chair right

· in front of you, we're in page 459 in there, but Job chapter 28.

· And as you're flipping there, I've got a question for you that

· I want you to think about, and this will kind of harken back

· some childhood memories, is did you as a kid ever try to

· dig a hole to China?

· Yeah, right?

· Well, you know what I'm talking about.

· Like, you're like, I'm going to make it to China.

· Um, I remember very vividly in elementary school, I went on a

· trip with my buddy and we went to Mexico with his family and

· we were on the beach and we're like, we're going to make

· this hole get to Mexico and we got deep, all right?

· Like literally we had to like repel each other in and like

· pull each other out and we got so deep that we were trying

· to get this water out and we kept on scooping it.

· I think we got below sea level and as we spent three hours

· trying to get water out, it kept coming back in, but

· here's why we were so like, we're going to make this hole

· work because back at home in Phoenix, Arizona, when you try

· to dig a hole, you get about eight inches, maybe a foot

· and you're like, I'm out, right?

· Like the ground is hard.

· You try to put a bush in the plant and you're like,

· this is why I'm calling a landscaper.

· Andre said, I'll have you on speed dial.

· You can put it in the ground.

· I'm not doing it.

· And it's like, it's just too much.

· It's like so hard, like we're going to do this the right way.

· But here's what's crazy about this is Arizona is known for

· people digging in the ground in digging, trying to find something.

· You know, Arizona is known for its five C's and one of

· those C's is really important that we get out of the ground.

· Any guesses on that?

· Copper.

· Someone said citrus in first service.

· I didn't even know that was one of the five C's.

· All right.

· So I'm like, you don't get citrus out of the ground.

· Anyway, but copper is right.

· And what's crazy about is Arizona produces actually 70% of the

· copper used in our country and throughout North America.

· That's so much copper comes from our state.

· And what's crazy about this is that men and women for years have said,

· I know the ground is hard, but I'm going to dig.

· I'm going to push and I'm going to get past it.

· And you see today in Job chapter 28, we actually see what Job is

· talking about here in verse two.

· He says iron is taken from the ground and copper is smelted from

· ore Job is talking about our state here.

· But here's the reality that we're going to find as Job talks about

· digging into the ground, looking for answers to his problems.

· And it comes to this suffering reality today is the book of

· Job takes us from why to who, meaning over and over again,

· in this book, Job's been asking these questions of why is this

· happening? Why is that happening? Why do bad things happen?

· God, why, why, why, why, why, why?

· And he doesn't get answers to it, but instead he's constantly

· pointed back to the God who is behind all of it.

· But here's the crazy thing that we take in Job chapter 28 in this

· little detour is, but wisdom was not what they were looking for

· the whole time as they're digging into the ground, as they're digging

· into their life, looking for the answers to questions.

· The one thing they didn't have on their bucket list trying to find

· as they're looking for copper in different fine ores here is they

· weren't looking for the wisdom that God put right in front of them.

· As we pick up in the book of Job previous to this, if you've been

· tracking alongside with us is Job had left off last week after

· hearing just round after round of his friends pounding on him and

· telling him how to fix all his problems.

· And maybe you've been in there as you've had people in your life

· trying to fix your problems and your friends and your parents and

· your family members.

· And Job was just exhausted by all this ending.

· And as he's sitting in his suffering, as he's sitting in the

· ash sheep of his issues into that bleeds, this silence and

· Job does something nobody expects.

· As it's quiet, as answers have run out, he bursts into song and

· poetry in Job chapter 28.

· And as I was reading this, I was like, I thought Disney invented

· princesses singing for no apparent reason, but apparently Job did it

· 4,000 years before Disney ever did.

· And as Job bursts into song with this, here's what we're going to

· see is as he goes into this poem, it's almost like everything gets

· paused in the questions that everyone was asking all of a sudden

· start to fade away.

· Cause for 25 chapters, they've been on the ash sheep, digging

· for answers.

· Why did this happen?

· What did Job do?

· What is God doing behind all of it?

· But here's the problem.

· They were digging for an explanation.

· They were never digging for the wisdom that God wanted to impart

· upon them.

· And you see today, we're going to find out that there's a

· is information tells you what happens, whereas wisdom tells you how to

· live when you don't know why it happened in the first place.

· So this morning, as we go on this journey with Job, he's going to

· take us on a little mining trip.

· He's going to take us through three shafts, three ways to dig.

· And we're going to find today that when we dig for life's answers, he's

· going to show us the path we typically take, but ultimately the

· destination we need to end with.

· And it first starts as we dig for life's answers through refining

· our work, through refining our work.

· Job chapter 28, starting in verse one, as Job begins this journey,

· he says this, surely there is a mine for silver in a place

· where gold is refined.

· He says, iron is taken from the ground and copper is smelted from

· ore.

· A miner puts an end to the darkness.

· He probes the deepest recess for ore in the gloomy darkness.

· The miner cuts shafts far from human habitation in places unknown to those

· who walk above ground, suspended far away from people.

· The miners swing back and forth.

· Food may come from the earth, but below the surface, the earth is

· transformed as by fire.

· Its rocks are a source of lapis lazuli containing flecks of gold.

· No bird of prey knows the path.

· No falcon's eye has seen it.

· Proud beasts have never walked on it.

· No lion has ever prowled over it.

· The miner uses a flint tool and he turns up ore from the root of the

· mountains.

· He cuts out channels in the rocks and his eyes spot every treasure.

· He dams up the streams from flowing so that he may bring to light what is

· hidden.

· You see, Job, as he opens this chapter, he starts to describe a miner and

· he goes down into the dark with a lamp.

· He says the miner cuts a shaft far from human houses and habitation.

· He swings back and forth and back and forth in the dark where nobody

· up top can even see him.

· What I love here is Job is describing hard labor and work.

· And you got to think about this is Job was describing mining, which is hard

· today, but 4,000 years ago was even harder.

· There was no hard hats.

· There was no oxygen sensors.

· There was no OSHA, which maybe that was a good thing.

· I don't know.

· It's just a man and his lamp and a rock face.

· And Job says, but the man goes down anyway, because he knows what's

· down there is worth it.

· Check out how he describes some of this in verses nine through 11.

· It says the man moves mountains.

· Literally he turns rivers.

· He goes into the dark and he brings treasure up into the light.

· What I love about this church is Job is celebrating human ingenuity.

· And honestly, we should too.

· You look at verses seven and eight, he says, the Falcon has the

· sharpest eye in the sky yet has never seen these paths.

· The lion is the proudest beast on the earth and it has never walked

· there, but a human being with a lamp and a flint tool goes where

· no animal has ever gone.

· And what Job is describing here is that God made us to do exactly this.

· In Genesis chapter one, God told the very first humans, Adam and Eve

· to subdue the earth, to subdue every mine, every lab, every hospital.

· He's seen every engineer who figures out how to get copper out of a

· mountain is doing something that God has designed us to do.

· I mentioned Arizona is known for its copper.

· Do you know what the highest producing copper place in the

· entire North America is?

· Anyone want to guess?

· Yeah, it's called a Morenci.

· You don't even know that exists because it's not a place you want to go.

· It's about four hours east of here.

· You're almost to New Mexico.

· Usually if you go that, you're like, I'm too close to New Mexico.

· So I'm going to go back to Phoenix, right?

· There ain't nothing there.

· Uh, New Mexico is boring, but this little town of Morenci, it's crazy

· because generations of people have put food on the table by digging into that

· ground and how beautiful it is that when we push the boundaries of who we

· are, when human ingenuity says, I'm going to strive for more, I'm what's

· known as an early adopter, meaning when I see something that's new in

· technology, that's groundbreaking.

· I want it.

· And where I fail in this most of the time is an Apple products.

· Cause I don't own a percentage of Apple.

· Apple owns a percentage of Andrew.

· All right.

· It works the reverse way.

· So literally I was like, the iPhone duos came out and I had it pre-ordered.

· I had it literally paid pre-ordered.

· It's going to come to me and I'm watching all these reviews online.

· And I'm like, you know what?

· I'm an early adopter.

· I got this.

· It might break, but mine wouldn't break.

· And I'm like, I'm going to do this.

· And finally, like the negativity beat me down so much.

· Like I even envisioned having it.

· I was like, I can pull it out.

· I can preach from it right here.

· And then like, I can have that technology in my hand.

· And I finally canceled my pre-order because the negativity of the world

· told me it was a bad idea and I might regret it, but iPhone duo 2.0

· next year is coming anyway, but here like our world strives for more.

· Our world is just like, Hey, let's increase in technology.

· Let us better ourselves.

· Let us push ourselves in church.

· That's a great thing.

· It is something God ingrained in us.

· In verse one, Job says, and he starts this off.

· He says, the mind is a place where gold is refined.

· If you were with us last week, we said, and as we looked at

· Job's friends, talk to him that you might be too tired and too

· beaten down by life to find God.

· But the phrase we use in that, but you're still the gold.

· He's refining that Joe leaked this language in, but this week

· I love as Joe picks up on that refining language, he shows us

· the other side of it, that we as men and women are pretty good

· refiners to give us enough time, give us enough tools and we can find,

· we can build, we can develop almost anything.

· And that's how most of us, if we're honest, we also

· handle our pain and our troubles.

· They're like, Hey, I'm going through something.

· Don't worry.

· I can think about it.

· I can research it.

· Genius can strike and I can figure it out.

· I don't know if you're like me, but all my best ideas come in the

· middle of the night when I'm laying in bed, I'm tired.

· I'm ready to go to sleep.

· Last night I was chasing four kids as a Pokemon through my neighborhood.

· As it's raining, trying to get umbrellas, literally I had a Pokemon onesie.

· Um, but I'm like going through and we're trying to get all

· candy around our town and I'm laying in bed just tired.

· But that's where all these ideas come into my head.

· And then I start writing them down on my phone, start doing research.

· Then I have AI fix all that stuff and make it better the next day.

· But it's like engine, like we were struck and all of a sudden

· we want to fix our problems.

· We want to fix our issues.

· And those are good things.

· But Job tells us here, he's building this is that we'll hit a limit.

· Cause Job is setting us up after 11 verses of everything we can dig up.

· Everything we can accomplish on our own power.

· Verse 12 asks us the one thing we cannot do on our own.

· And we see our second thing is we dig for life's answers first by refining

· our work, but then it also leads to reaching beyond our limits.

· Keep going in verse 12 as Job sets this up, but he says, but where can

· wisdom be found and where is understanding located?

· He's like, we dig, we search, we accomplish, but

· there's this thing called wisdom.

· And where is it?

· It's not in the mind.

· Verse 13, no one can know its value since it cannot be found

· in the land of the living.

· The ocean depth say it is not in me.

· While the sea declares, I don't have it.

· Gold cannot be exchanged for it.

· And silver cannot be weighted out for its price.

· Wisdom cannot be valued in the gold of a fur and precious

· onyx or lapis lazuli gold and glass.

· Do not compare with it.

· In articles of fine gold cannot be exchanged for it.

· He says, coral and quartz are not worth mentioning.

· The price of wisdom is beyond pearls.

· He says, Tofaz from Kush cannot compare with it.

· And they not can, it cannot be valued in pure gold.

· Job spent 11 verses saying humans, if you give them time,

· and energy and passion can find anything except this.

· He said they could find anything they want.

· They can, they can make a new mousetrap.

· They can develop something else, but they cannot find this.

· And this he talks about is wisdom.

· Some of you're like, I know wisdom can't be found in my husband's mind.

· I've been searching for it for a while and I don't know where it is.

· Right.

· But he's saying wisdom cannot be found in the land of living.

· He says, you can't dig deep enough.

· In verse 14, he said, the ocean depths say it's not in me.

· So, so let's test that theory a little bit.

· How deep have human beings ever dug?

· In 1970, the Soviet Union started drilling a hole in far North Russia.

· And they wanted to see literally how far they could go.

· I think they were trying to end the world.

· I'm not sure.

· Okay.

· It seems like a terrible idea, but get this, they drilled for almost 20 years.

· Any guesses on how far they got 50 miles.

· That's a good dig.

· You, that's a big guess.

· Seven and a half.

· Someone said seven over here.

· Cause you've Googled it cheaters, right?

· You took too long to say that.

· If you knew it, you knew it.

· All right.

· But seven and a half miles was crazy about this.

· Is it still the deepest hole that humans have ever made when they got

· down there, they said the rock actually functioned like plastic.

· Instead of stone, literally like it was defying the laws of physics.

· The more they got there and didn't understand it.

· Now you see here that in, in seven and a half miles sounds deep until you

· realize that the center of the earth is almost 4,000 miles down there.

· What's crazy about this is put this in perspective, 20 years of the best

· engineering in the world, and we got less than one fifth of 1% of the way there.

· That's what it looks like when we reach beyond our limits, we can go further

· than anybody ever has, and we're still barely scratching the surface.

· And guys, this is just the earth.

· The questions Job is asking go a lot deeper than a rock.

· Job has been crying out throughout this book is why did my children die?

· Where is God in this whole situation?

· Is he fair?

· Is he just?

· Does he know about me?

· Does he love me?

· Does he even care what is happening?

· Here's the deal.

· Church, you can't drill a hole to those answers.

· But if we're honest, some of you have been trying for years.

· You've asked the questions.

· Why did the marriage end?

· Why did the baby not make it?

· Why did God let this happen to me?

· And why did I go through this tragedy through my life?

· And you ask and you go deeper and deeper and you've dug more than maybe

· the people around you know, and you still haven't hit the bottom of it.

· But Job continues and he says, well, if we can't dig to it, Job says,

· we definitely can't buy it.

· In verses 15 through 19, Job references gold and silver and onyx

· and lapis azulea and coral and crystal and topaz.

· Job takes the entire whole jewelry store and empties it on the counter.

· And he says, wisdom says when we're trying to buy it, that's,

· that's not enough.

· I love in 28, 18, this beautiful verse and the second half of it,

· it says that the price of wisdom is beyond pearls.

· We can't buy it.

· And think for a second of who's writing this.

· When we are introduced to Job and Job chapter one, Job used to be

· the greatest man in the East.

· He had 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels.

· If wisdom were for sale, Job could have bought it.

· Job in today's terms was worth tens of millions of dollars.

· Rumor has it that Job had one of Elon Musk's flying cars and personal

· robots on preorder 4,000 years ago, right?

· This dude was loaded.

· But Job with all the money in the world says, I can't buy wisdom.

· Every answer his friends gave him, they were free, but they were worthless.

· Every possession and put in in mobility he had was trying to be

· spent to get this and it was worthless.

· He couldn't find it.

· And you think about this for us today, church, we live in the

· most informed generation in human history is we are literally carrying

· a library on earth in our pocket every single day, but we are not

· any wiser.

· We might not know more TikTok dance moves, but we're not any wiser.

· And Job shows us that we might know more answers than ever, but we

· still don't know how to live.

· I mean, think about this for a second.

· We have figured out how to split the atom as mankind, yet we don't

· know how to stay married across our worlds.

· We can map the human genome and it has been done, but we can't figure

· out how to forgive a brother who has wronged us.

· We can find copper seven miles down into the earth, but we can't find

· peace seven inches into our chest.

· You see information is something you can dig up, but wisdom is

· something you have to receive.

· And here's the deal.

· This week, you're actually going to feel that this Tuesday is

· election day and I last week, I got to fill out my ballots.

· I dropped them in the mail.

· Me and my wife, we, we dropped those off and, and had what we

· voted on there, you know, put of what we think is best for our

· community and church, this is, this is something we all get to

· exercise here in America and you should vote.

· You should speak what you are feeling and how to make our

· community the best possible place it is.

· We have that freedom here and we should exercise it.

· And here's the thing at Crossroads.

· We're never going to tell you how to vote.

· We're never going to tell you go which way to go, but you

· should exercise it.

· I was just hearing a stat this morning that probably about 50% of

· those who can vote in our state will vote.

· 50% of people are deciding how we are going to live in the

· society that we have in Surprise and in Arizona and beyond.

· But here the question becomes, well, how should I vote?

· Like, what are the ways?

· What is behind that?

· And here's the thing, because you're being told how to

· vote by a lot of different ways, one by the thousands of

· text messages we were getting.

· Oh my goodness.

· After the midterms are over, can I stop getting the

· text? I've blocked every politician in the entire nation,

· but I'm still getting them, right?

· You're getting the letters and the mail.

· You're getting the ads.

· You're getting the signs on the side of the road, which I'm

· ready to kick those over because then our Cross Church

· signs stand out a little bit more, right?

· But there's all this information bombarding us on

· how we should speak.

· But here's what I will tell you as a church member, as a

· follower of Christ, one thing we should all be doing is

· asking for the wisdom of God to be a part of it.

· James tells us in the New Testament that if we ask for

· wisdom, it will be granted, and we're going to see in

· just a second where that wisdom comes from.

· But here's where we continue on this on Wednesday morning,

· whatever the results will be, whether your candidate wins

· or loses.

· And no, we can't put our hope in those candidates

· because they are fallen just like us.

· But throughout scripture, we remember Daniel 2 and so

· many as that God says he removes kings and he

· establishes kings.

· He gives wisdom to the wise, the same God who holds

· wisdom, holds the outcome and the same one who will

· sustain us no matter what happens.

· So Job continues down this line and he's building

· this case.

· He's like, hey, we need to work as hard as we

· can.

· We need to make sure we are digging into the

· ground.

· We're bringing our resources up, but we will

· come to a point where we cannot do it on our own.

· We will reach our ends and beyond our boundaries.

· But this leads to verse 20, which I love.

· And as we dig for life's big answers, it leads

· to our last one.

· As we do this through relying on someone

· greater, check out verse 20, as he continues

· on this, he says, where then does wisdom come

· from?

· He's like, it doesn't come from my ability.

· It doesn't come from my riches.

· It doesn't come from anything I can

· you facture, but where does it come from and

· where is understanding located?

· Job says it is hidden.

· It is hidden from the eyes of every living

· thing and concealed from the birds of the

· sky.

· Abaddon and death say that we have heard

· news of it with our ears.

· Job continues and kind of get to the

· darkest part of this passage.

· And he's like, wisdom is hidden from every

· living thing.

· We can't find it.

· He says the birds can't see it.

· In verse 22, he even unpacks the sports.

· He says even death and destruction have

· only ever heard rumors of it.

· He says, nobody on earth has it.

· Nobody under the earth has it.

· But then in verse 23, as he gets to the

· depths of the despair and the darkness,

· the whole chapter turns on one phrase and

· check out verse 23, as Job is wrestling

· with this, I can't find it.

· I've reached the end of my limits everywhere

· I go.

· The wisdom is not there.

· But he says this, but God understands

· the way to wisdom and he knows its

· location.

· Job says, but God, we can't find it.

· But God knows exactly where it is.

· And he tells us how God uncovers it

· to us in verses 24, that God knows

· why God knows where it is.

· He says this, verse 24, for he looks,

· this is being God to the ends of the

· earth and he sees everything under the

· heavens.

· When God fixed the weight of the wind

· and distributed the water by measure,

· when he established a limit for the

· rain, I think God raised the limit for

· Surprise Arizona over the last weekend.

· All right.

· We were limited for a long time, but

· he says when you establish the limit

· and he established a path for the

· lightning, look at verse 27, he

· considered wisdom and he evaluated it.

· He established wisdom and he

· examined it.

· Job says that God knows where wisdom

· is for the same reason that he

· knows how much the wind weighs is

· God made it.

· He's like, it's not apart from him.

· He knows it intimately.

· He knows it deeply.

· As a parent, you understand this

· because you made your kids and you

· know your kids.

· I know my kids, the difference of

· them, right?

· They're all like have their own

· personality.

· Archie will be an engineer.

· Arlo likes to run into walls.

· Maybe he would be a good miner.

· I didn't think about that until

· now.

· Aria is just like the sweetest

· little girl.

· She's bossy, so she's going to be

· in some leadership role, telling

· people what to do because she

· likes to do that.

· And then Alice, two and a half

· years old, she's already like takes

· care of more babies than I've taken

· care of in my life.

· Like she has so many babies.

· She's like, hold my baby and like

· rock it and tells me how to do it.

· I'm like, you're an expert on this.

· But all your kids, you know them

· so well.

· When your kids lie to you, you're

· like, that ain't true.

· They're like, how do you know?

· Because I know you, right?

· I just know I made you.

· I created you.

· I know.

· And God's like, he knows the

· wind.

· He knows the rain.

· He knows the limits he set.

· Why?

· Because he created it all.

· And he created wisdom.

· Wisdom isn't some buried

· treasure that God forgot about.

· It's the blueprint he used to build

· the entire worlds.

· So if God has it, the only way we

· get it is if he hands it to us.

· And in verse 28, he does exactly

· that.

· Check this out.

· Is he being God said to mankind

· that the fear of the Lord, that

· is wisdom and to turn from

· evil is understanding.

· Now we break this down for a

· second.

· The fear of the Lord doesn't

· mean being scared of God.

· It means taking God seriously.

· It means trusting him and

· worshiping him, living like he

· is who he says he is, which is

· the God, the creator, the

· sustainer and the propeller of

· the entire universe.

· That's a big God.

· And notice what God did not

· say.

· He didn't say wisdom is

· understanding why he didn't say

· wisdom is having all the

· answers.

· He said wisdom is two things

· to trust me and to turn from

· evil.

· See, you can do both of those

· without knowing a single reason

· for your pain and your

· suffering.

· And this is good news for any

· of us today who might be

· sitting in the middle of ash,

· sitting in the middle of a hard

· season is we might not get a

· clear answer to our struggles,

· but we have the God who tells

· us how to push through it.

· But here's what will blow your

· mind is you go back to the

· very front of the book of Job

· in Job, chapter one.

· And this is, I just love this.

· How clear this connects in such

· a powerful way.

· But in Job, chapter one, verse

· one, we are introduced to the

· book of Job that says there

· was a man in the country of

· Uz named Job and listen to

· how he's described.

· He was a man of complete

· integrity who feared God and

· who turned away from evil.

· He feared God.

· He turned away from evil.

· Those are the exact same

· phrases we see in 28, 28 in

· chapter one, verse one.

· It's leaking what we'll see in

· 28, verse 28, how God

· describes Job is the same way

· that Job describes wisdom

· coming from God.

· And for 25 chapters, the

· friends have dug through

· Job's Job's life, looking

· for the hidden sin, like

· bro, you did something wrong.

· There has to be some

· explanation of why your life

· is so messed up.

· You did something to make

· your kids turn out this way.

· You did something to get laid

· off from that job.

· You did something to make

· your marriage fall apart.

· There has to be a reason.

· Let's find it, Job, and

· let's blame you.

· But here behind all of it is

· he was actually the wise

· man in the whole story.

· And this is the suffering

· reality we see as wisdom was

· never what they were looking

· for.

· They wanted an explanation to

· life's problems, but God

· had already given them an

· example right in front of

· their face.

· And we see Job is actually

· an example of what we'll see

· a greater Job in Jesus

· Christ in the New Testament.

· But here's what's so crazy is

· this part of the book, it

· actually turns the story of

· Job because up till now,

· Job has been searching for a

· reason to his problems.

· But Job, after this, will

· search for a person that

· is greater than his problems.

· After this, Job just wants

· to see God's face.

· And that's exactly what it

· means to rely on someone

· greater is wisdom doesn't

· start when you figure out

· God, it starts when you

· trust that God that you

· can't figure out.

· This year has been awesome

· in the life of Cross Church,

· but also hasn't been

· without its challenges.

· If this is your church

· family, back in March, we

· rolled out a discipleship

· initiative, which is a

· nicer way of saying a

· capital campaign, right, that

· we're going to raise money.

· And we said we want to do

· this so that we can start

· more churches.

· We started here at 175th

· and Bell in 1998 as

· Palm Vista Baptist Church.

· And since then, God's just

· an incredible things over

· the life of the church.

· And as the church has

· grown, God has given us

· a vision for, Hey, what

· if we didn't just grow

· here, but what if we

· also sent people out to

· start more churches in

· more locations and see

· lights in different

· communities?

· And he's done that this

· past year.

· We opened two more

· locations.

· We have six different

· churches that are part of

· our Cross Collective and

· God has been great.

· But in March, when we

· launched this vision and

· we did this, we had some

· people right away.

· We're like, I'm out like

· you're asking me to give

· money.

· Nope.

· I'm not part of that.

· And they left and then

· the coming months, people

· kind of gave us a soft

· yes, but then there

· are some people that

· as time went on that

· they jumped off and

· they jumped off for that

· or for various reasons.

· And I'm like, guys, like

· we're growing.

· There's exciting things

· happening and they're

· like, yeah, but we

· didn't like this.

· We didn't like that music.

· We didn't like the kids

· ministry.

· We didn't like that.

· We don't like you.

· That's my favorite.

· I'm like, I liked you.

· I'm sorry.

· But in there people

· have left and here's

· the problem.

· I'll be honest with you.

· It hurts.

· And I'm like looking

· around and my God, like

· you gave us this vision

· like, and now these

· people are leaving our

· church.

· Like what is happening

· right now?

· Is this actually going

· to work or is this

· thing going to sink

· because we're trying

· harder, but we're not

· getting the results that

· we thought we were.

· And then we stepped

· back for a second.

· And here's just the

· glory of God and how this

· as, as we evaluated

· this year today, we started

· looking at numbers and

· right now, year to

· date, compared to last

· year, which in the

· life of our church, we

· are 40% up and giving

· that we were over the

· previous year on track

· for the largest giving

· year we've ever had in

· Cross Church.

· Okay.

· You celebrate God for that.

· We've had more baptisms

· here at Cross Church

· surprise and across our

· collective than we've

· seen in the life of

· Cross Church.

· You can clap for that too.

· And I'll give you one

· more we do.

· We're seeing the growth

· in our numbers, the

· growth in our attendance,

· more people coming last

· week.

· Kyle shared this.

· We had more kids on

· this campus on any

· Sunday we've ever had

· outside of Easter.

· We had the most kids

· we've ever had here.

· And we're just seeing

· in our students are

· exploding numbers we've

· never seen.

· God is just doing a

· work here.

· And here's the thing is

· sometimes when things

· don't happen on our

· schedule or by our

· means, or when we think

· we work hard enough

· and all of a sudden we

· don't see the immediate

· results right in front

· of us.

· Sometimes God is saying

· you just need to trust

· me and things will be

· okay.

· And God, as we've

· trusted him through

· this, what we're

· finding out is our

· staff has not got

· smarter.

· We've got dumber if

· anything, because AI has

· made us dumber.

· But we haven't gotten

· more talented, but

· we've trusted the God

· of the universe to

· provide the path that

· he has taken us down.

· And guys, he is

· providing and here

· when Job comes to the

· end of himself, when

· he says, man, I tried

· to make this all happen

· on my own by

· working harder, man,

· I tried to buy the

· issue to my problems

· and it didn't come

· out when he finally

· comes to that God

· I'm just going to

· trust you and fear

· you and know that

· you are in control

· is when his life

· starts to turn.

· But here's the

· question of how do

· we get to that point?

· Because in verse 21,

· it seems pretty

· hopeless when Job

· describes wisdom.

· He said it is hidden

· from the eyes of

· every living thing

· and concealed from

· the birds of the sky.

· Maybe today you

· feel like that's you

· like life has handed

· you a lot of issues

· and you're like, I

· feel like I want to

· know how to fix

· myself. I feel like

· I want to know what

· the next step forward,

· but I feel like Job

· and I feel like God

· has hidden the path

· that this wisdom

· is not there

· that I don't see.

· Here's my next step.

· Here's the direction

· I need to go.

· Well, I love this.

· As Job says,

· this path is hidden.

· 2000 years ago,

· Paul writes to another

· church who they had

· some wisdom

· and knowledge issues.

· In Colossians Chapter

· two, Paul writes

· to a church that was

· literally in a city

· that they were selling

· wisdoms.

· We think multi-level

· marketing and Ponzi's

· are new. Now they're

· happening in Colossae.

· They're like, buy these rocks.

· We got from Sedona

· and you'll be smart, right?

· It was right here.

· They were trying to sell

· wisdom and Paul writing

· to this church in Colossians

· Chapter two, verse two,

· he says this.

· I want their hearts

· to be encouraged

· and joined together

· in love so that they

· may have all the riches

· of complete understanding

· and have the knowledge

· of God's mystery.

· Who is the knowledge

· of God's mystery?

· Christ Jesus.

· In verse three,

· I love this, in him,

· in Jesus are hidden

· all the treasures

· of wisdom and knowledge.

· Here's the beauty in this

· is Paul uses the same word

· hidden that Job used

· in verse 21 of Chapter 28.

· But listen to the difference

· in Job 28, 21,

· wisdom is hidden from you.

· But in Colossians

· Chapter two, wisdom is

· hidden in him.

· And the difference is it's

· hidden in the God man

· who has been revealed to us.

· And this is our enduring

· truth this morning.

· The thing that we get

· to practice and live out

· is wisdom is not hidden

· from you.

· It is revealed in Jesus Christ.

· Here's what I love is

· when God hides

· something from you,

· it is out of our reach.

· But when God hides

· something in Jesus,

· it is held for you.

· It is kept safe.

· It is waiting for anybody

· who comes to him waiting

· for him to be revealed

· to us when we say yes to him.

· And Paul says it again

· in First Corinthians one,

· he says Christ Jesus became

· wisdom from God for us,

· that Jesus became all

· the foolish things of our world

· that we want to know

· how we live right,

· how we can know God,

· how we can answer

· the great mysteries

· of our world.

· It starts with Jesus.

· And look how Paul

· finishes that sentence

· in First Corinthians.

· It says Christ became wisdom

· for us so that he could be

· our righteousness,

· our sanctification,

· be our redemption.

· The wisdom of God

· isn't a tip sheet

· for getting you through life.

· It is a savior

· who makes you right with God,

· who makes you new

· and buys you back

· from the sin of your flesh.

· Back in our parable series

· this summer,

· Jesus told us about a merchant

· who found one pearl

· of great value

· and he sold everything

· he had to buy it.

· In Job 28,

· he says the price of wisdom

· is beyond pearls,

· but this is a different pearl

· altogether, church.

· This pearl has a name

· and the name is Jesus Christ.

· And here's how we know

· this wisdom is for people

· like Job,

· like people like you and me

· who are in the dark,

· who have hurt,

· who have suffered,

· who are in the midst of our pain

· looking for the answers

· to life's questions

· and feeling like

· we're getting no breakthrough.

· We are in the dark,

· but Jesus went into the dark for us.

· Let's go ahead.

· You see, to everyone watching

· 2,000 years ago,

· the cross

· looked like the most foolish thing

· God could possibly do.

· A king on a criminal's cross,

· a savior who couldn't save himself,

· but Paul says

· what looked like foolishness

· was actually the wisdom of God

· on full display.

· He was stripped of everything.

· He was mocked by people

· who had all the answers.

· He was buried in the ground

· and three days later,

· what did Jesus do?

· He dug himself up out of the grave.

· Amen.

· And here's the problem with this,

· is sometimes we hear that

· and we're like, great.

· I'm gonna say yes to Jesus right now

· and he's gonna give me all the answers.

· He's gonna fix my problem.

· I'm gonna pay my rent.

· I'm gonna get a new life

· and it's gonna be great.

· Job never got to hear

· what happened in chapter one

· that God and Satan were making a wager

· he didn't even know about.

· Job never got the answer

· of this is why your life fell apart,

· but he got something better.

· He got Jesus himself.

· You remember that hole you dug to China?

· How far did you get in that hole?

· Be honest.

· Six inches, eight inches.

· Maybe an overachiever got two feet, all right?

· Someone between service said

· her kids dug a hole so big

· that they made a pool.

· I'm like, that sounds made up,

· but I'm gonna give my kids shovels after today

· and hope I get a pool in my backyard.

· But you dug,

· and as you dug, eventually you probably tired out.

· But what if by some miracle,

· God handed you down a holy shovel

· that could just push through that Arizona soil

· and you just kept digging?

· And as you got tired,

· God gave you the strength

· and you kept digging and you kept digging

· and somehow by the miracle of God,

· you dug through the entire earth about 8,000 miles.

· Here's the crazy thing,

· if you do that in Surprise, Arizona,

· you ain't ended up in China.

· You're ending up in the middle of the ocean.

· And as we dig through life,

· searching through answers,

· sometimes we end up in an ocean

· and what did Job say about the ocean and the sea

· when it comes to wisdom?

· It ain't there.

· That we can dig and we can fight

· and we can put our ingenuity to the test

· and that is great,

· but if we want that to save us,

· we'll come up short every time.

· When we reach beyond our bounds

· and reach beyond our ability

· and we get frustrated that we start relying

· on other people that are greater,

· here's the fear church,

· is we start relying on the wrong people who are greater,

· the people we perceive to be the greater,

· the people in our lives that we look to as mentors,

· the people that aren't say they're gonna promise

· a better future like the politicians,

· the tech moguls, the AI, whatever,

· all the great things of our world,

· but when we rely on them to be our wisdom,

· to be our guide,

· to be the answers to the big questions of life,

· they will fail us time and time again.

· But who will not fail us

· is the God man in Christ Jesus

· who died for us,

· who rose again

· in him, in him,

· who wisdom is hidden for us,

· but is revealed to us

· so that we can experience it for all of eternity.
