Digging for Answers

Job 28 · Week 8

In him are hiddenall the treasures of wisdomand knowledge.

Colossians 2:3

The Big
Question

Where do you go looking for answers
when life does not make sense?

dig deep.

Arizona was built by people who refused to stop digging. About 70% of America's copper still comes out of Arizona ground. In Job 28, Job stops arguing and sings about miners chasing treasure in the dark.

For twenty-five chapters, Job and his friends dug for an explanation. They never dug for wisdom. Information tells you what happened. Wisdom tells you how to live when you don't know why it happened.

three shafts we dig.

  1. Job 28:1-11

    Refining our work

Job celebrates human ingenuity. Miners cut shafts where no falcon has looked and no lion has walked, then bring treasure into the light. God made us to subdue the earth, so go to the doctor, read the book, get the counselor. But these verses set up the one thing we cannot dig up.

  2. Job 28:12-19

    Reaching beyond our limits

After twenty years of drilling, the deepest hole ever made reached about seven and a half miles and barely scratched the surface. Job's questions run deeper than rock. Wisdom cannot be bought with gold or pearls either. We have more information than ever, and we still don't know how to live.

  3. Job 28:20-28

    Relying on Someone greater

But God understands the way to wisdom. He made it, so He has to hand it to us, and in verse 28 He does: fear the Lord and turn from evil. Those are the very words used of Job in 1:1. Wisdom starts when you trust the God you can't figure out.

Enduring Truth

Wisdom is not hidden from you, it is revealed inJesus.

Group Discussion & Response

Job 28

talk it through.

  1. When you face pain or confusion, how do you usually work it: researching, planning, rehearsing? Where has that helped, and where has it come up short?

  2. Read Job 28:12-19. Why can't wisdom be dug up or bought? Where do you see our information-rich culture still struggling to know how to live?

  3. Compare Job 28:28 with Job 1:1. What does it mean that the wisdom the friends were digging for was sitting right in front of them?

  4. Read Colossians 2:2-3. What changes when wisdom is hidden in Jesus rather than hidden from you? Where do you need to put the shovel down this week?

respond together.

  1. Pray

Name one situation where you still don't know why. Ask God for wisdom there, and ask Him to help you trust Him even without the explanation.

  2. Praise

Thank Jesus that He came down into our dark shaft, went all the way to the grave, and came back up with forgiveness and life in His hands.

  3. Preach

Tell someone this week that wisdom isn't what you know, it's Who you know. Point them to the Savior who came all the way down to find them.

  4. Practice

Remember what Communion shows: God's wisdom is known in the person of Jesus Christ. Put the shovel down this week and trust the One who came down to you.

Close in Prayer

Father, we confess that we keep digging for answers You have not given us. Thank You that wisdom is not hidden from us but revealed in Jesus. Teach us to fear You, to trust You, and to turn from evil even when we don't know why. When we are tempted to pick the shovel back up, remind us that Christ came all the way down to find us. In Jesus' name, amen.
