Heat up here. [Music] Well, good morning, Cross Church Phoenix. How are you? Morning. Good morning. If you're wondering why why didn't they turn on the lights and do everything so I can actually see the video, we've been having a week uh with tech. I think the storm completely destroyed some of our of our internet connection. It might have just completely destroyed the modem. And then some other things um also got taken out. So, we'll be working on that this week. Uh, but if I don't uh if I've never met mentioned before, I'm Pastor DJ, the campus pastor here at Cross Church Phoenix. So, welcome and uh come find me after service. I'd love to meet with you and chat with you. I see a lot of new faces, so it's wonderful. New faces and some old faces, so that's uh great. But uh yeah, if you would open your Bibles to 2 Corinthians chapter 10. 2 Corinthians chapter 10. And if you don't have a Bible, there's a Bible in the seat back in front of you and you can use that, but keep it, make it your Bible. You can mark it, underline it, highlight it, do what you like, but uh bring it back next week and make that your Bible. We'll gladly replace it. This morning, we're continuing our series through the end of 2 Corinthians called Ready for Harvest. If you recall the first half of 2 Corinthians, we called rooted in holiness tracing uh first through the first seven chapters of 2 Corinthians. And now on the back half we're in ready for the harvest. And we took a break last Sunday if you recall to address the biblical response to evil. And we did that on Sunday morning. And then if uh if you were here, we covered 2 Corinthians chapter 9 Sunday night during our Sunday night service. And both of those are available online for you if you uh want to be caught up or if you missed chapter 9. Well, Paul has spent the last two chapters, 8 and 9, encouraging and exhorting the church to contribute to this collection of money that Paul and his ministry team are taking for the poor believers, the poor saints in Jerusalem. And he's shifting gears yet again. If you read the first seven chapters, it almost seems like he he shifts gears to talk about money, to talk about giving to his collection and why they should and what it is. And then now it seems like he's going to shift again in chapter 10 talking about if you have if you have a Bible with headings, it might say Paul's apostolic authority or Paul defends his uh apostolic authority or defends himself. uh he is going to be transitioning now again to talking about spiritual warfare. Yes, he's defending himself and his apostilhip. Um, but really what I love about chapter 10 is that even though we took a break to address the biblical response to evil last week, as we look at chapter 10, it continues to speak to what we're going through in our world today and the evil that we see around us, what our nation is experiencing, and not just here, but worldwide. This chapter 10 gives insight into what we're going through as we reflect on the evil we've seen the past few weeks. If we've learned anything from the vast amounts of evil occurring today, it should be this, that we are in the midst of serious spiritual warfare. And perhaps our response to these things can be unrighteous anger, frustration, or even hostility and hatred directed at people. people. For example, we might see the face of Charlie Kirk's murderer or perhaps Arena Zeroot's murderer or the faces of school shooters and our tendency is to believe that we are at war with them, that they are the problem. We look at them and we might say that's the enemy that we're against. When the reality is biblically the truth is they themselves are not the enemy. The truth is they're deceived and lost. That's the truth. What Tyler Robinson for example, Charlie Kur murderer doesn't know is that he was simply Satan's pawn in a much bigger war. He and others who commit such evil acts do so because they are blinded and confused by the real enemy who is Satan and his demonic henchmen. They believe the father of lies which drives them then to commit such atrocities. If you're wondering how can anyone do that, it's in the Bible. They reject God. And we saw it last week in Romans 1. How can people not just commit such acts of evil, but then you we've seen some of the reactions online being supporting and approving acts of evil. Romans 1 answers that it is because they have rejected God in biblical truth that they give approval to those who commit murder and other sins. That is why the Bible is it gives us the truth. We just sometimes don't know it's there because we're not reading it. But the bottom line is people don't just wake up one morning and figure figure uh you know I think I'll go commit some heinous crime. This is a process. What we're seeing today is the result of people created in the image of God believing lie after lie after lie. buying into ideas and concepts that are contrary to God over and over and over again until it drives them to the point of what we're seeing. We are in the midst of vivid spiritual warfare and how we fight this battle matters because there's a right way to do this and a wrong way to do it. So that's what we're going to talk about today. what it takes to fight this spiritual battle. Let's pray. Father, we thank you for this morning. We thank you for your word. God, I pray that you would speak through me, that you would speak your word to your people and use me simply as a vessel. Lord, I pray that you would wash over your people this morning. the Holy Spirit would cause us to understand and cause us to be convicted where we need it or encouraged where we need it and cause us to obey your word that your spirit would do what only the spirit can do. You'd help us in Jesus name. Amen. Well, I'm going to go ahead and read the whole chapter to you and then we'll break it down. So, 2 Corinthians chapter 10 beginning at verse one. Now I appall myself, in case you're wondering, it's him, Paul himself. Um, now I appall myself appeal to you by the meekness and of Christ. I, who am humble among you in person, but bold toward you when absent. I beg you that when I am present, I will not need to be bold with the confidence by which I plan to challenge certain people who think we are behaving according to the flesh. For although we live in the flesh, we do not wage war according to the flesh. Since the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but are powerful through God for the demolition of strongholds, we demolish arguments and every proud thing that is raised up against the knowledge of God. And we take every thought captive to obey Christ. And we are ready to punish any disobedience once your obedience is complete. Look at what is obvious. If anyone is confident that he belongs to Christ, let him remind himself of this. Just as he belongs to Christ, so do we. For if I boast a little too much about our authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not for tearing you down, I will not be put to shame. I don't want to seem as though I'm trying to terrify you with my letters, for it is said, he's quoting others here, for it is said, his letters are weighty and powerful, but his physical presence is weak, and his public speaking amounts to nothing. Let such a person consider this. What we are in our letters, we are uh I'm sorry. What we are in our letters when we are absent, we will also be in our actions when we are present. Verse 12. For we dare don't or we don't dare classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. But in measuring themselves by themselves and comparing themselves to themselves, they lack understanding. I love that, too. Paul's a little sarcastic. It's great. We, however, will not boast beyond measure, but according to the measure of the area of ministry that God has assigned to us, which reaches even to you. For we are not overextending ourselves as if we had not reached you, since we have come to you with the gospel of Christ. We are not boasting beyond measure about other people's labors. On the contrary, we have the hope that as your faith increases, our area of ministry will be greatly enlarged. So that we may preach the gospel to the regions beyond you without boasting about what has already been done in someone else's area of ministry. So let the one who boasts boast in the Lord. For it is not the one who com uh one commending himself who is approved, but the one the Lord commands. The first thing I want us to see is this. Fighting the spiritual battle requires the right weapons. Fighting the spiritual battle requires the right weapons. Notice Paul's attitude in chapter 10. He appeals to them by the meekness and gentleness of Christ. He is not proud, arrogant, or abusive, which unfortunately describes a lot of people, Christians included. Instead, Paul is meek, gentle, and humble, which he says is a reflection of Christ. But also don't mistake meekness for weakness, so to speak. Meekness and gentleness is strength under control. If I can simplify it that way, strength under control. Abuse might be strength out of control. Meekness and gentleness, strength that is under control. Jesus himself said one of his autobiographical statements that described his character. Right? Jesus made a lot of autobiographical statements, I am the way, the truth, and the life. I am the light of the world. I am the bread of life. I am the good great shepherd. I am I am who he is. But one of the only, if not the only autobiographical statement that Jesus made about his character describing himself was that for I am meek and lowly. And Paul draws on this. For Jesus, for example, he could have called, the gospels say thousands of angels to fight for him when he was being arrested in the garden of Gethsemane. In fact, before he was arrested, they come to him and Jesus says, "Whom do you seek?" Or King James, "Whom seekest thou?" Right? And they say, "Jesus of Nazareth." And he says, "I am he." Remember what happens? They all fall down backwards. And I imagine Jesus in my mind's eye just kind of watching them gather themselves and pick themselves up and dust themselves out. But we're back to a rescue. And then Jesus obviously lets him arrest him. But he is in control. He has all the power. And yet he doesn't use it because he knows he needs to go to the cross. And here in chapter 10, Paul has also been accused of being weak. in verse one, I grown humble among you in person but bold towards you in action is kind of has a hint of sarcasm to it because he's commenting on their accusations against him. I am humble when I'm with you but apparently I'm really bold when I'm absent. So I'm two different people you're saying and he's refuting that. Paul's accusers are saying that he talks a big game in his letters, but when he shows up in person, he's a little soft. And what Paul's saying is what you see as as soft is actually goodness and gentleness, a reflection of Christ. But he does say, "I will come over there and be bold if I have to be." I like to say this is Paul's, "Don't make me come over there and spank you. because he wants to come over there and what give them a big old hug and be united with them and just love on them and they love on him back and it's just a great wonderful time. But he says I will come over there and spank you so to speak if I have to but I don't want to don't want to. Now as we look at the language Paul is using this is war siege like language. You see weapons are involved demolition of strongholds are involved. The taking of captives are here. Punishing and disobedience. This is war language. But it's not a fleshly war that we're engaged in. This is spiritual. Look at the flow. The flow is this. We have weapons, but they're spiritual. These weapons are powerful not through man, not through social media. These weapons are powerful not through man, but through God to demolish strongholds. And then you see, we demolish strongholds, but those strongholds aren't physical. What are those strongholds? We're demolishing their arguments and proud things raised up against the knowledge of God. their ideas, concepts, beliefs that go against God. We take captives, we see. But what are those captives? Those captives were taking our thoughts and we bring those to the obedience of Christ. And so, please, my plea and Paul's plea to us and to you is never forget that our battle is spiritual. It is not fleshly. Our battle is against arguments. The ESV, I think, or another translation says lofty opinions raised against the knowledge of God. People are not the object of Paul's battle. Their arguments and proud ideas against God are. You see the difference? And that's what we're against, too. Our part in this spiritual warfare is not to malign and denigrate people. How many of us have prayed for the shooters involved in these situations? It's hard. [Music] That is what we are called to do. The response, our response is not to belittle people made in the image of God. It is to bring biblical truth to them because they are blind. If you think about it, it's exactly what Charlie Kirk would do, right? Just to kind of have as an example, right? People hated him. It wasn't because he attacked them personally, but because he destroyed their argument so well that they had no other option than to just call him a big meanie. That was the only thing they had left was to attack him, the person, because people would accuse him of being of hating a certain group of people, right? They assume assume that, oh, you hate these kinds of people. And he'd say, can you prove it? What have I said to show that I hate those people? And they could never do it. People will go on yelling, screaming, rampages, just calling him names, right? Against hate, fight fighting hate with hate, which is always ironic when people do that. But he didn't hate people. He destroyed their arguments. And because he was a Christian, he used scripture and a biblical worldview to destroy those things. raised up against the knowledge of God. And when their argument was destroyed, they had nothing left but to attack him personally rather than to refute their arguments. Right? You know, you know, when someone's lost a debate, when they begin attacking the person rather than the argument that they're making, to me, that's a white flag of surrender. if you start attacking the person rather than the argument they're making. So, what are some of these arguments? What are some of these proud things raised up against the knowledge of God? Well, there's many, but I'm going to give you two. We could start with abortion. How do we as Christians combat abortion? because we can't support it. It's unbiblical, right? It's a a thought concept raised up against the knowledge of God. How do we combat that? Well, it's not by devaluing and tearing down women who've had them or have considered having them or are considering having them. That's not what to do. So then what do we do? We give biblical truth. We show them that God's created that baby who is alive and is a real person with dignity and value, no different than she is. And that's why a big part of successful ministry to women considering abortions is education, access to ultrasound, support, and community, not lambasting them and degrading them. Sometimes the goal is to what? Provide an ultrasound and they see a child heartbeat and they don't go through with it. Or they meet a church outside of an abortion clinic who who I watched one testimony where this one lady was so relieved to see the church out there because she wanted any reason to not go through with this but felt like she couldn't handle a child on her own. and the church was there and now she's an active member of the church in Tempee who does this and it's like I was glad they were there because they gave me the community support and love that I needed to and now I have people helping me raise this child that she's holding in the video. Our war is not against people. It's against the lies that the enemy has told them about the sanctity of human life. For example, on the abortion issue, lie after lie after lie about the sanctity of human life and the God's creation of that human life. If you don't believe that and you believe all the lies associated with this, well, this is a nuisance. This will cramp your style. This isn't worth keeping. If you believe all of that, no wonder. But if we bring truth and say, "No, no, no, no, no. This is a gift from God. This little child, this person, this human being is a gift from God created by God and worth raising and keeping. That's how we do this battle." Another one would be gay marriage. I can't shy away from all these things, right? Otherwise, I'd be able to counter myself. But what about gay marriage, right? God created marriage and he gets to dictate what it is. And scripture is very clear that gay marriage is between or that marriage is between one man and one woman. And what does the world do? The world comes back and says, you know, it's hateful to stand for biblical marriage. It is hateful to stand for a biblical view of marriage because love is love which isn't saying anything. If I said food is food, I haven't said anything. We could use an emotion. Anger is anger. Well, if the if the definition is in the term, you haven't defined anything, right? You have to define it somewhere else somehow. So, so love is love. What is that? that you didn't say that's not that doesn't make a point. Doesn't say anything. But if you buy into that, the lie that marriage is not between one man and one woman, but marriage is whatever we want it to be, it's no wonder we have the problems that we have today. But again, our war is not against homosexuals or people in the LGBTQ community. Our war is not against them. What is it? It is we are at war with the lies the enemy has told them this time about human sexuality. So we can take biblical concepts, truth of God's word and see how the enemy has twisted it and sold it to the world around us. We just looked at sanctive human life and God's design for marriage, but we could look at a whole lot of other things. Are you fighting this battle through name calling, talking down, or demeaning other people? Cuz if so, you're wrong. We're wrong. That's not the way you do it. Bottom line. But are you are we fighting this battle with the truth of scripture given from a heart of love and compassion for those who are confused, lost, and deceived by the enemy? Because if so, then we're fighting the right battle with the right weapons. Which leads to our next point. Fighting the spiritual battle requires biblical consistency. Biblical consistency. We're not going to be very effective in this spiritual battle if we don't know God's word. Sometimes the problem is just ignorance of what God says. It's like giving you a sword that you don't know how to use. Paul was given authority by God to be an apostle and to go on missionary journeys planting churches. That's what he did. And Paul says that this authority is meant to build you up, not to tear you down. But again, they would they mocked Paul's. You see, they mocked Paul. You see it in the text. They're saying his letters are weighty and powerful, right? He talks of big game in his letters. But when he shows up in person, he's not even a really good communicator. Some people pride themselves in being a good communicator and a fancy orator. Paul's not even all that in a bag of chips. And that's the point. It's because of God and his strength working through Paul. And so Paul, as he often does, he'll say, "I boast in my weakness for that when I am weak, then he is strong and I am strong." And so, how does Paul defend himself here? It's with simply his integrity and consistency, right? Who I am in my letters is who I am in person. And if I need to come show you that, I will. In other words, Paul's not going to be a keyboard cowboy. I thought that was hilarious. I love that term, keyboard cowboy. Uh maybe maybe an internet troll might work better. Um, but he's not going to sit behind words and sit behind a computer and write a bunch of stuff knowing that uh he'll never be held accountable for. He can remain anonymous, which a lot of people do today. Hide behind a screen, hide behind a keyboard, say things that they would never say to people if they were in front of them. But that's not Paul. No, he says what he means and he means what he says. And he will come say it to their face if he needs to. So, what he's saying is what he writes and how he lives are consistent. Now, I understand we're not Paul. We're not writing new scripture. I'm not saying any of that. And we don't even have all of Paul's letters, but we have a lot of them. Do we know it? Do we know the scriptures as a whole? Do we read scripture? Do we know it? Do we know God's word well enough to live a life consistent with what it says so that we have that integrity? So we can faithfully correct people and do it knowing that we're not asking them to do anything we're not already doing. Paul's not asking them to do something he wouldn't be willing to do himself. The bottom line is do we practice what we preach? Do we love our enemies as Christ told us to or do we become a keyboard cowboy and marginalize them and attack them over the internet? So, how do we know if we're fighting the spiritual battle or right if it's consistent with scripture? We're not about going out there and giving our opinions. This is scripture and scripture rooted in love. The truth given in love. And our last point is this. Fighting the spiritual battle requires seeking the Lord's approval above all else. What false teachers and many people do today is measure and compare themselves with themselves. And surprise, they come to favorable conclusions about themselves based on their evaluation of themselves. Think, hm, I really am pretty awesome, aren't I? and all they're doing is comparing themselves to others or comparing themselves to themselves a low standard. They don't compare themselves to the standard of Christ that Paul alluded to in verse one. I believe that's why Paul opens this way. I'm going to appeal to you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ. That's the standard. Not all this comparing yourselves to this to yourselves stuff. And he says, "You guys are without understanding if you're doing that." So by worldly standards, Paul was measured and found wanting. But Paul's not concerned with their evaluation of him because his strength is from God and he's seeking the Lord's approval above everything else. See, what was happening is though Paul is painted as the one out of bounds, right? Like you're out of bounds, bro. It's actually his detractors who are out of bounds. So, let me put it this way. Trespassors had trespassed and while trespassing accused Paul of being the trespasser. I don't know if that makes sense or not. It does to me. For example, if you go on vacation, and someone breaks into your home, lives in your house, and when you come home, they're sitting on the couch watching your TV, and when you show up, they call the police accusing you of trespassing on their property. That's an illustration of what Paul's saying. He says, "Our ministry reached to you. We came to you with the gospel and you believed. and we helped start this church. But now false teachers had come in and they're turning the church against Paul, saying that he's the one out of line. And Paul's like, I'm part of the reason you're even a church to begin with, guys. The Corinthian church should be a home for Paul. It should be welcoming, mutual love. But others have moved in and now they're planting seeds of doubt and questioning Paul and causing Corinthian church members to turn against Paul. And ultimately though, as heartbreaking as that is, Paul doesn't seek men's approval. Doesn't seek the Corinthian church's approval. He wants to be on the same page as them. and his heartbreaks over their attitude towards him. But ultimately, he seeks the Lord's approval and commendation. If you start living for Christ and standing for a biblical worldview, the world is not going to like you. Not going to like us. The world will be hostile to it. It can't help but be Jesus said it would be. So, we can expect opposition. But, but if we keep in mind that we're serving God and his approval is all that matters, that's what will keep us going when times get hard. You look around, times are getting hard. Will we stand? Or will we cave in when the pressure is on? So, our closing thought is this. As we fight this spiritual war, remember that's what that what's most important is leading people to Christ. This world needs the gospel more than anything. That's what was most important to Paul and it should be what's most important to us. Regardless of what's going on in the world, our mission is to make Jesus known all day, every day. Every single day, making Jesus known. The key is not winning arguments. It's winning people to Christ and letting the power of the Holy Spirit transform their lives. I can't change anyone. Neither can you, by the way. We don't have the power to change anybody. We have the truth. We can give it and share it lovingly. But I have zero power to change anyone. But when people come to Christ and they are indwwellled by the Holy Spirit, watch him change. I've seen it. You just watch God do the work in someone's life. They change. They're transformed by God because of the gospel of Jesus Christ. And it's a wonderful thing. I just get to enjoy it and join and just celebrate with them the change that's happening in their life. I can't explain it and I'm not responsible for it. They just change because God is changing them. And it's wonderful. It's wonderful to see. And we have a beautiful example of that this morning in baptism. At this time, I want to invite uh Edward, Elise, and Audrey to come up to the front here, and we're going to um celebrate baptism together. And then I'm going to invite also the worship team to come up and be uh be ready to go once once we're done here. You guys will come up and hopefully you can see. I know it's a little bit um off centered and a little bit lower. But um we're going to going to baptize. We're going to start with Elise. She like, "All right, ready to go." Um this is Elise Edwards and um How long have you been coming to Cross Church? Almost two years. Almost two years. So um I've only been here since November. So, um, you know, she's an OG. She goes way she goes way back. Um, but we met and wonderful family, too. The the Edwards family is wonderful. They're they're back there with us. And, uh, oh my, look at all the kids. He's wonderful. Love you. Invited them to come join us. Um but as I got to know Elise um we began to talk and she come up to me uh one day and just wanted to talk to talk about uh baptism talk about what's going on in her life and I won't share all the details but God has been working in your life causing you to give up some things that are ungodly and pursue things that are godly. Um, Elise was raised in a Christian home. Um, but had gone wayward, had gone astray, and uh, she, the way that she describes it, uh, you can talk to her afterwards, but she, uh, had had wandered away from Christ for a season and, uh, had recently come back to to Christ. She's like, I just want to dedicate my life to Christ. I've never been baptized as a believer, and I want to do that. And so we talked about our salvation. We talked about what it means to know Christ. And she's I believe all of that. That's me. So um if you want to step in, we will still be warm. All right. Elise, is Jesus Christ your personal Lord and Savior? Yes, he is. Do you believe that he died on the cross for your sins personally and rose from the grave on the third day to show his power over sin and death and that he has authority over your life? Yes, I do. All right. Well, then upon your profession of faith, I baptize you, my sister, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. For we are buried with him by baptism unto death and raised to walk in newness of life. [Applause] All right. Next up we have Audrey. This is Audrey. Everyone say hi Audrey. she wanted to share a few words herself. So Audrey's been coming to church now for since March. Since March. Um and uh well here I'll let you share a bit of your story. Um so I have had a crazy life like 20 years of um an addiction. And I actually got sober in uh January 14th of this year. Um, and I started going to church in my rehab and then I was like, "Okay, I got to find something over here." Um, this church has been here, I don't know how long. I've driven past it. I don't know how many times. And eventually just became a building and I was like, "Let me check it out." And the minute I walked in here, I was like, "This is my church." Um, and however, I continued to live like spiritual double life. He doesn't remember saying that, but he did. Um, and it stuck with me. And um in May I had a terrible experience where um I had a suicide attempt that I don't remember. I like 3 days of my time was taken away from me. But after I got out of the hospital, I called the police officer that found me and he was like, "It is a miracle you are alive. You were in a place where nobody would be able to find you." And luckily they found me. And I was like, "Okay, God, I'm giving it to you." And so I said, "Jesus, I'm going to follow you." And that's when I started getting into the word. I got into the community. I literally get into the Bible every day. I even said this last night. If you have time to watch a movie every day, you have time to get into the word. So please do that. I also want to say one last thing. Last night, I was just laying in bed watching a movie and for some reason I felt like this need to read the Bible. And the next chapter of Matthew that I was in was chapter 16. chapter 16 verse 24 where Jesus said to his disciples basically um if you want to follow me do it um pick up your cross and follow me. I tried to remember the verse by part, but I couldn't. But that really stuck with me last night. And I thought, "Wow, God, thanks for working in my life right before baptism." But that's my story. Yeah. When I said, you know, I can't change anyone, but you just watch people get saved and and dwell by the Holy Spirit and they change. She's one of the one of them. There was many, but I just watched God change Audrey's life, and it's a fun experience to see. Audrey, do you believe Jesus Christ is your personal Lord and Savior? Absolutely. Do Do you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins personally? That he rose again from the grave, showing his power over sin and death, and that he has authority over your life? Yes. Well, then, upon your profession of faith, I baptize you, my sister, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. For we are buried with him by baptism into death and raised to walk in. [Applause] All right. And then we have Edward. Brother Edward. This is Edward. And uh Edward, you've been coming to church for a while, too, now, haven't you? couple years. Um Edward, uh his story, he uh he was baptized as an infant into the Catholic church. Uh and we have been talking and getting to know each other. One day he just said, "I need to talk. I need to talk to you about my salvation and about baptism." You remember that? And uh one of the assignments I gave him was to read First John. And he he's like, "All right. Um I need to do this, right?" and uh he's a believer in Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. He says, "But I want to be baptized biblically. I want to do this God's way." And uh so here we are. You ready? Ready, Edward? All right. Edward, do you believe Jesus Christ is your personal Lord and Savior? Yes, sir. Do you believe that he died on the cross for your sins personally? That he rose again on the third day, showing his power over sin and death, and that he has authority over your life? Yes, sir. Well, then upon your profession of faith, I baptize you, my brother, in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. For we are buried with him by baptism into death and raised to walk in.
