0:20 · Hey, if you got your Bibles, 0:23 · if you are new here, my name is Kyle Gallagher. 0:25 · I am the youth pastor here at Cross Church. 0:28 · If you got your Bibles, open up to Job 15. 0:30 · That's where we're gonna spend our time this morning. 0:33 · And if you don't have one, grab a friend, read with them, 0:37 · or grab a Bible right in front of you, 0:39 · right underneath that chair. 0:40 · We love diving into God's word. 0:42 · But as you guys are flipping there, 0:43 · I wanna give you guys some stats. 0:46 · I wanna show you some numbers this morning. 0:50 · A recent study was done on kids 0:52 · from the ages of 11 to 13. 0:56 · And this is what they found about this study. 1:00 · 50% live with both of their biological parents. 1:06 · 31% live with a single parent. 1:10 · 17% live in a blended family. 1:15 · 2% live in some other situation. 1:21 · Worldwide, only 7% of children 1:25 · live in a single parent homes. 1:28 · And here's the biggest one. 1:30 · They found that kids in the United States 1:33 · are more likely to live with a single parent 1:36 · than anywhere else in the world. 1:41 · Why does that matter? 1:43 · Why do I bring that up this morning? 1:46 · Because we are the leaders of the entire world 1:51 · that kids will grow up in a broken home. 1:55 · Kids will grow up. 1:56 · And this is the reality of living in a single parent house. 2:01 · Why does that matter? 2:01 · Why do I bring that up? 2:03 · Because we need to know as parents, 2:05 · as pastors, as grandparents, as faithful church members, 2:08 · we need to know the culture we are living in right now. 2:12 · This is not a future thing. 2:14 · This is the culture we live in today. 2:17 · And we need to actually acknowledge 2:19 · who is sitting next to us today. 2:22 · Who is sitting in the chair next to you. 2:26 · Where our teenagers are at, where our families are at. 2:29 · And how are we gonna walk alongside them in this mess? 2:35 · How are we gonna be alongside them in this? 2:38 · Guys, I work with teenagers every single day 2:40 · and right now these questions that they are asking 2:43 · is that this isn't the life I want. 2:46 · They're asking these questions. 2:48 · How does God fit in my life? 2:50 · Man, how did my home get so broken right now? 2:53 · What happened right now? 2:57 · Translation, our children are being affected 2:59 · by our choices. 3:02 · As culture, we have turned away from God 3:05 · and what God has designed the family to be. 3:07 · We have compromised our homes 3:10 · and we have turned what God already called beautiful. 3:14 · We've turned away from that. 3:17 · And guys, don't hear me say this, 3:18 · like if you have one of these homes right now, 3:21 · if your home is broken, you've been through a divorce, 3:23 · you have a blended family right now, 3:25 · if you are raising your kid as a single parent, 3:28 · hear me say this, you have not failed. 3:31 · That is why we have the cross. 3:33 · That is why we have Jesus Christ 3:35 · because you can turn back to him 3:37 · and you can get on the right path. 3:41 · But church, hear me say this. 3:44 · We do need to get on the right path. 3:47 · We do need to turn the tide here in America 3:51 · and we do need to do it for the sake of Gen Alpha 3:54 · and Gen Z right now. 3:58 · So let me ask you a couple of questions this morning. 4:01 · Would you stay faithful to your faith 4:03 · if everyone turned on you? 4:06 · Would you stay faithful to your faith 4:08 · if your family turned on you? 4:12 · Would you stay faithful to your faith 4:14 · if everyone you loved, everyone around you turned on you? 4:20 · See, this morning we're gonna learn about Job, 4:23 · that what if wasn't a what if, it was his exact reality. 4:27 · Chapters 15 through 21 is where we're gonna spend 4:30 · this time right now. 4:32 · And for the last five weeks, 4:33 · we've been answering this big question 4:35 · is not why things happen, but who is already there? 4:42 · Who is already there? 4:45 · And Job's life fell apart. 4:47 · The first conversation we saw Eliphaz, 4:49 · he told him, you must have done something wrong, Job. 4:53 · The second conversation he had with Bildad 4:56 · is that, man, he said that nobody's there 4:58 · to speak for you. 5:00 · Then the third one, Zophar, we learned about last week 5:02 · is that just say you're sorry Job 5:04 · and everything will be okay. 5:06 · That was the friend approach. 5:09 · And now we're gonna get around two of their conversations. 5:14 · Same three people, same as sheep right here, right now. 5:19 · But their words get harsher with Job. 5:22 · They get more direct with Job. 5:26 · They turn to him and they attack his faith. 5:30 · We're gonna watch three conversations 5:32 · and I think exactly exposes the numbers 5:34 · I shared with you today. 5:36 · It exposes what's going on in the American home today 5:41 · because the hardest turns don't happen out there. 5:44 · The hardest turns happen in our four walls, 5:48 · right here in this house, 5:50 · right here with us, our closest people. 5:54 · So here's my big question tonight that I wanna answer 5:56 · or today I wanna answer. 5:59 · When your people turn on you, 6:02 · will you let them turn you? 6:04 · When your people turn on you, will you let them turn you? 6:09 · Let's read verses 11 and 17. 6:12 · Eliphaz, he kicks it off and he says in 11, 6:16 · are God's consolations not enough for you? 6:20 · Even the words that deal gently with you, he says. 6:23 · Then you skip down to verse 17 and he says this, 6:26 · listen to me and I will inform you. 6:29 · I will describe what I have seen. 6:33 · See, the first point I want you to see is this, 6:35 · is that some people, man, they're gonna turn you 6:37 · from God's word and they're gonna turn you to their word. 6:42 · Look at those first two verses 6:43 · that Eliphaz speaks right here. 6:45 · He says, man, isn't God's comfort enough for you? 6:48 · Job, isn't God's words enough for you? 6:51 · But listen to what's underneath Eliphaz's words, 6:54 · God's comfort, he means his own speech. 6:57 · He is calling his own words God's words. 7:02 · See, the Hebrew word right here is listen. 7:06 · The Hebrew word is Shema. 7:08 · It's the word in Deuteronomy 6-4, it says listen Israel. 7:12 · The Lord our God, the Lord is one 7:15 · and it's the word God uses, 7:18 · call his people to hear him. 7:21 · Eliphaz says this about himself, Shema, listen to me. 7:27 · So here's the big thing right here. 7:29 · He even brings back up right here 7:31 · in verses 18 and 19, he says, man, 7:33 · listen to these wise men of our time, Job. 7:36 · He reflects on these wise men 7:38 · that are in their land right now 7:39 · that these wisdom thinkers have been passed down 7:43 · to their fathers, to their children, ancient wisdom, 7:46 · they're above debate. 7:48 · And in verse 19, he says this, 7:50 · the land belonged to them. 7:53 · No stranger passed through the land 7:55 · without going through them. 7:58 · They know everything that is going on in their land. 8:02 · So here's the translation of what Eliphaz is saying. 8:05 · Job, we're the insiders, you're the stranger. 8:10 · He puts them right on the outside. 8:13 · And guys, we have wise men all the time around us. 8:17 · We have wise men right now today. 8:20 · They just come in the form of a podcast, a ring light. 8:25 · They string these phrases together 8:27 · that you've constantly heard through a reel, 8:30 · a 60 second reel, maybe a phrase like this, 8:33 · follow your hearts, protect your peace. 8:38 · I love this one. 8:39 · Students and young generation are all about this one. 8:41 · I'm gonna live my truth, right? 8:45 · We hear that all the time in our culture today. 8:48 · These messages that have been stringed together, 8:51 · stitched together, they've been around so long 8:53 · that now we have taken them as truth. 8:57 · See, the algorithm has become people's pastor 9:00 · more than the church. 9:03 · The algorithm has become the people's pastor. 9:07 · And that pastor preaches to you 9:10 · when you wake up in the morning 9:11 · and before you go to bed at night. 9:14 · That's the first thing we check. 9:15 · That's the first thing that we look at. 9:16 · That's the last thing we look at when we go to bed. 9:20 · We all have our phones connected to us. 9:24 · But here's what the algorithm does. 9:26 · The algorithm never once tells you to deny yourself 9:30 · and pick up your cross. 9:36 · So let me ask you a couple of things right here. 9:40 · Do you think God's comfort is not good enough for you? 9:45 · Do you think God's counsel is not good enough for you? 9:50 · Do you think man's word is better than God's word? 9:54 · Do you listen to your podcast? 9:55 · Do you listen to your news? 9:58 · Do you listen to their information 10:00 · more than what God's word says? 10:02 · Do you have that self-help book 10:04 · that's on your nightstand instead of the Bible? 10:08 · I feel like we should sing the Dusty Bible song 10:11 · by Josiah Queen right now, right? 10:15 · But look at what Job does right here. 10:17 · Job doesn't make that trade. 10:20 · Chapter 16-2, he says this. 10:22 · You are all miserable comforters. 10:26 · That's how he starts out with that. 10:29 · Pretty intense, right? 10:30 · He even gets the, you know, better, right? 10:32 · He even lays out his facts of what he is feeling. 10:34 · Look at that 15 through 17, 10:37 · what he says to his friends. 10:39 · I have sewn sackcloth over my skin. 10:41 · I have buried my strength in the dust. 10:45 · My face, my face has grown red with weeping, 10:51 · although my hands are free from violence 10:54 · and my prayer is pure. 11:00 · I love these verses. 11:02 · They're honest, they're real. 11:06 · It's exactly what's going on with Job. 11:09 · You read in 17-6, Job describes that 11:11 · when people look at him, they spit on him. 11:14 · He's disgusting to look at. 11:17 · And still through all of this, 11:19 · Job chooses not to give into Eliphaz's words. 11:24 · Still through all this, Job chooses God's word. 11:28 · He chooses his word that's gonna feed him 11:30 · every single day. 11:32 · Guys, your phone will feed you every single day, 11:34 · but it will still leave you starving. 11:37 · The algorithm tells you exactly what you want. 11:40 · Jesus tells you exactly what you need to hear. 11:48 · And most of us won't have a cost 11:51 · of somebody spitting in our face. 11:54 · Most of us won't have a cost 11:55 · of what Job writes for you right here 11:57 · that people won't spit on us, 11:59 · but our price is gonna be comfort. 12:02 · Our price is gonna be, 12:04 · oh man, I'm not included with that group. 12:06 · I'm not included with that social media tag. 12:10 · Or hey, I'm a stranger to them. 12:13 · I'm the outcast, I'm the black sheep. 12:17 · That's gonna be our price. 12:20 · See, a lot of Christians don't understand this 12:22 · about leaving a false faith. 12:25 · Most of you in this room know 12:26 · that I came from a Mormon background. 12:28 · I was born and raised Mormon. 12:29 · I was atheist living in this Mormon house. 12:32 · And I actually went on my mission 12:33 · for two and a half years in Chile 12:35 · and I absolutely loved it. 12:36 · It was great. 12:37 · I found Jesus, the real Jesus 12:39 · that's preached about in this Bible. 12:41 · I put the Book of Mormon in the Bible side by side 12:44 · and I decided, hey, I'm gonna find out who Jesus was. 12:46 · And I came to my faith. 12:47 · I came to Christ through his word. 12:50 · But I had to come to a reality when I got home. 12:55 · I said, okay, I'm ready to leave the Mormon faith 12:57 · and I got to make Christianity my lifestyle. 13:01 · I got to make Christianity my way of life. 13:05 · And so when I declared that to my family, 13:07 · I was kicked out. 13:09 · When I declared that to the church, 13:11 · I was brought before a council of men 13:14 · that I was born and raised with. 13:16 · They knew me from every sense. 13:17 · I was a little guy. 13:19 · And they put me in front of a council 13:21 · and I had to defend my faith to them. 13:26 · See, most of us Christians, 13:26 · we can cuss out Pastor Andrew 13:28 · and we're still invited the next weekend, right? 13:34 · But in the Mormon faith, 13:37 · if you go up against their word, 13:40 · if you go up against the Bible and their Bible 13:44 · and you show them who the real Jesus is, 13:46 · they say, get out of the church. 13:48 · You're no longer a part of it. 13:49 · They excommunicate you. 13:51 · So my cost was giving up my community 13:54 · that I knew ever since I was a little boy. 13:57 · My cost was defending my faith 13:59 · in front of my family 14:00 · and constantly going through the heap 14:02 · and being disregarded 14:04 · and then eventually cast out 14:05 · where I'm no longer a welcome in that church. 14:10 · See guys, Eliphaz went for Job's heart, 14:12 · but Bildad, man, he goes even deeper. 14:14 · He goes about his name. 14:16 · Look at these verses in 18 through 17. 14:19 · 18 through 17. 14:21 · I'm just gonna read 17 right here. 14:22 · It says, all memory of him perishes from the earth. 14:28 · He has no name anywhere. 14:32 · And look at verse 21. 14:33 · He delivers this killer blow to him. 14:36 · Indeed, such is the dwelling of the unjust man. 14:40 · And this is the place of the one who does not know God. 14:47 · See, Bildad reveals something to us 14:49 · is that some people will turn you away from his name 14:52 · and turn us to their name. 14:56 · See, this is interesting. 14:57 · When you look at this, 14:58 · you guys gotta understand Job's world right here. 15:01 · Most people in Job's world believe you live after death 15:05 · through your kids, through your grandkids. 15:10 · Being remembered through your kids 15:12 · and your grandkids was better, 15:15 · was how they needed to live life. 15:17 · To be forgotten was worse than dying. 15:22 · Having your children around you 15:24 · and have them live on your name 15:26 · was more important to them. 15:29 · But these two verses, 15:32 · right before Bildad gets into this, 15:34 · he says a wicked man has no children, no descendants. 15:39 · And he says it to a man 15:41 · that just buried 10 of his kids. 15:49 · Guys, we do the same thing. 15:51 · We measure our name by our house. 15:55 · We measure our name by our career. 15:59 · We measure our name about how well our kids are doing. 16:02 · Man, are their grades good? 16:04 · Is travel ball good? 16:06 · Man, are they having a scholarship? 16:08 · Are they getting married well? 16:11 · Man, if our kids look good, 16:12 · then we must be doing something right. 16:15 · Then we must be doing something great. 16:19 · So let me ask you a couple questions. 16:21 · Are you scared? 16:23 · Are you scared that your name won't be remembered? 16:28 · Are you more concerned 16:30 · with where you dwell on this side of heaven? 16:35 · Is your house and where you live more valuable 16:38 · than who is speaking in your home? 16:42 · Is your family, the family vacations that you go on 16:46 · more important than where you spend your time 16:48 · at the dinner table or in a back porch 16:51 · or even on the couch with your kids? 16:56 · And here's the big one. 17:00 · What if your kids end up leaving 17:03 · and they turn against you? 17:07 · What if your kids end up walking away from their faith? 17:14 · See, look at these verses right here, 17:16 · in 13 through 19. 17:18 · Chapter 19, 13 through 19. 17:23 · It says this. 17:25 · This is Job speaking. 17:27 · He has removed, 17:30 · he has removed my brothers from me. 17:36 · My acquaintances have abandoned me. 17:39 · My relatives stopped coming by 17:41 · and my close friends have forgotten me. 17:43 · My house guests and female servants 17:46 · regard me as a stranger. 17:48 · I am a foreigner in their sight. 17:50 · I call for my servant, but he does not answer. 17:55 · Even if I beg him with my own mouth, 17:59 · my breath is offensive to my wife 18:02 · and my own family finds me repulsive. 18:06 · Even young boys scorn at me. 18:08 · When I stand up, they mock me. 18:11 · All of my best friends despise me 18:15 · and those I love have turned against me. 18:20 · Everything in Job's life is falling apart. 18:24 · His brothers left him, his relatives left him, 18:27 · his closest friends left him. 18:30 · Verse 17 says that his wife 18:32 · can't even stand to be near him. 18:35 · Job loved his wife. 18:36 · Remember chapter two? 18:39 · Chapter two, it says that man, his wife was near him, 18:42 · but when things got rough, she said, 18:45 · hey, curse God and die, Job. 18:48 · You ever been in a marriage argument? 18:50 · I hope that never comes out of your wife's mouth, okay? 18:55 · But to be fair to her, she buried the same 10 kids. 19:01 · She's broken too. 19:03 · She's struggling in this moment too. 19:07 · Job poured everything he had into his whole world, 19:10 · everything he had into his wife 19:13 · and she still ended up leaving him, turning away from him. 19:19 · Bill Dad never says this part out loud. 19:22 · The home you put your security in, Job, 19:24 · it turned on you. 19:26 · The kids you put everything into, they walked away. 19:29 · It walked away from you. 19:32 · The spouse that you built everything around, 19:34 · she ended up leaving you too. 19:37 · That's why all throughout scripture, 19:39 · God keeps reminding us and he keeps asking 19:43 · this one question, will you choose me first? 19:50 · All throughout scripture, Jesus says this 19:53 · and I love how Jesus puts it the best. 19:55 · In 1037, he says this and Jesus says, 19:58 · the one who loves a father or mother more than me 20:01 · is not worthy of me. 20:03 · The one who loves a son or daughter more than me 20:07 · is not worthy of me. 20:08 · Husbands, wives, future husbands and wives, parents, 20:12 · hear me say this, God commands you to love 20:15 · every single person in your life. 20:17 · But God says, do not put your ultimate hope in them 20:21 · that will eventually fail you. 20:22 · Put your ultimate hope in God that will never fail you. 20:33 · Guys, this world is broken 20:36 · because people kept putting their faith in the wrong thing. 20:42 · People are putting their faith in the wrong places. 20:47 · The numbers I read to you this morning are real. 20:49 · This is our reality we are living in. 20:54 · And loving God doesn't mean everything 20:56 · gets cleaned up in your life. 20:59 · Loving God doesn't mean everything falls into place. 21:02 · Job loved God, Job loved him 21:05 · and everything fell apart in his life. 21:10 · But he does promise if you do love me 21:12 · when things do fall apart, you won't fall apart with it. 21:19 · So we need to get real this morning 21:22 · and that's exactly what Job does. 21:24 · Look at verse 21, he says, have mercy on me friends. 21:28 · Have mercy on me my friends. 21:30 · He is asking for mercy from the very closest people to him 21:35 · and they won't give it to him. 21:37 · So he stays glued to the name that has mercy. 21:41 · He stayed glued to the name 21:42 · that speaks mercy in his life. 21:45 · I'm reminded about a story 21:46 · when I was going through my hard time. 21:48 · I'm ex-communicated from the church. 21:50 · I got no family around me. 21:51 · I was homeless for a little bit. 21:53 · I started getting my feet underneath me. 21:55 · I started dating my beautiful wife. 21:56 · She was my girlfriend at the time. 21:58 · Now we're married. 21:58 · We have four kids, it's an amazing thing. 22:02 · But during this time as I was dating her, 22:04 · I hit up my boy that I grew up with in high school 22:07 · and this is Josh and his beautiful wife 22:09 · here on the screen. 22:11 · And I hit up Josh and I was like, 22:13 · Josh, I need to talk to you. 22:14 · So we went out to dinner 22:17 · and after dinner, I started to explain to Josh. 22:22 · I was like, Josh, I don't know 22:24 · if I can keep doing this, man. 22:26 · I don't know if I can keep doing this thing called God. 22:28 · I don't know if he cares about me. 22:30 · I don't know if he loves me. 22:31 · I don't even know if he's real anymore. 22:34 · And Josh looked at me and he said, Kyle, don't give up. 22:40 · Kyle, God does love you. 22:43 · He does care about you. 22:46 · Keep fighting the good fight. 22:50 · See, Josh didn't make a name for himself in that moment. 22:52 · He pointed to me a name that is above all names, 22:56 · the name of mercy that he pointed me to. 23:01 · He spoke life and truth into me there. 23:05 · See, Eliphaz attacked his word, 23:06 · Bildad went to his name, 23:08 · but Zophar, he goes even way deeper than that. 23:13 · Zophar attacks his heart. 23:16 · Look at these verses in 24 through five. 23:18 · It says this, 23:21 · don't you know, Job, 23:24 · whatever sense antiquity from the time 23:26 · a human was placed on earth, 23:29 · the joy of the wicked has been brief 23:32 · and the happiness of the godless has lasted only a moment. 23:39 · And then look at the final verse 23:41 · that he says right here to Job. 23:43 · He says this in 29, 23:44 · this is the wicked person's lot from God, 23:49 · the inheritance God ordained for him. 23:53 · See, the third point is this, 23:54 · is that some people are gonna turn you away 23:56 · from God's heart 23:56 · and they're gonna turn you to their hearts. 24:00 · Look at these verses again. 24:01 · He's basically saying this, Job, your heart loves evil. 24:07 · Job, you are going to inherit death. 24:10 · Says this to his face. 24:13 · Andrew literally said that to me last week. 24:17 · He's like, do you even believe God?
