Permission to Fall Apart

Job 3 · Week 2

Forthe thing I feared has overtaken me, and what I dreaded has happened to me. I cannot relax or be calm; I have no rest, for turmoil has come.

Job 3:25-26

The Big
Question

What do you do with the questions that never get an answer?

start here.

The two most common words in a church lobby are I'm fine. Somebody asks how you are doing, and your mouth answers before your brain gets a vote. For some of us that is the week's biggest lie.

We have been quietly taught that faith means keeping it together, so we smile and sing and hold it in. Job 3 is in your Bible to give you permission to stop pretending.

move through it.

  1. Job 3:1-10

    Why was I born?

After seven days of silence Job finally speaks, and it is not a hymn. He curses the day of his birth, not God. He runs Genesis in reverse, asking for darkness over his own day. Grief does not only make us sad; it makes us want to un-make things.

  2. Job 3:11-19

    Why did I live?

Job describes the grave like rest: peace, sleep, kings and slaves side by side, small and great together. He says rest three times in seven verses, then ends the chapter with I have no rest. He does not love death. He wants the hurting to stop.

  3. Job 3:20-24

    Why am I here?

Job finally aims a question upward and calls himself hedged in. In chapter 1 that same hedge was God's protection; now it feels like a cage. Pain bends our vision and repaints protection as a prison. God did not change one degree between chapter 1 and chapter 3.

Enduring Truth

Some questions never get an answer, but the fear underneath themalready got a Savior.

Group Discussion & Response

Job 3

talk it out.

  1. Job asks three honest questions and never gets an answer for any of them. Which of those three has sat with you the longest, and what have you done with it?

  2. Job's friends sat with him seven days and said nothing, and that was the best thing they ever did for him. When has silent presence helped you more than advice did?

  3. Job called God's hedge a cage. Where have you recently read God's protection as a prison because of what you were feeling at the time?

  4. Verse 25 says the fear was already there before the disaster hit. Peel back one of your own why questions. What older fear do you find underneath it?

respond this week.

  1. Pray

Pray Sunday's two prompts at home. God, why is this happening? God, I know You are bigger than my fear of this. Say them out loud.

  2. Praise

Put It Is Well With My Soul on before the hard day arrives, and sing it as something you have decided rather than something you feel.

  3. Preach

Read Hebrews 2:14-15 slowly. Jesus came first to break the fear of death, not to explain the why. Preach that to yourself when answers do not come.

  4. Practice

Fall apart in company. Tell one person in this group the thing you have been calling fine, and let somebody sit in the ashes with you.

Close in Prayer

Father, You kept Job 3 in Your Bible because You are not afraid of our honest questions. Thank You that lament is not the opposite of faith. We bring You the whys we carry and the fear underneath them. Where our pain has bent our vision, steady us with what we knew was true before the clouds came. Thank You that Jesus walked into the darkness on purpose and broke the fear of death. Amen.
