Question

When life falls apart and nobody explains why, who is still there?

It is the first NFL Sunday of the season, and every team is undefeated. When a season falls apart, coaches get the film. They can run every play back and find the why.

When life falls apart, nobody hands you the film. Job is God's word for people who never got it. Everyone here has just left a storm, is standing in one, or has one coming.

  1. Job 1:1-5

    The ideal world

    The camera settles on Uz and one man. Job is a man of complete integrity, whole all the way through, the same on a Tuesday as on a Sunday. He has ten children, seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels. But the narrator lingers on the family altar, not the portfolio.

  2. Job 1:6-12, 2:1-6

    The invisible war

    The scene cuts to heaven's throne room. Satan does not raise Job's name. God does. Unable to attack Job's conduct, the accuser attacks his motives: does Job fear God for nothing? Permission always comes with a prohibition. The enemy is real, but he is on a leash. And Job never gets to read this chapter.

  3. Job 1:13-21, 2:7-9

    The impossible worship

    Four messengers arrive in one day. Oxen, sheep, camels, then all ten children. Job tears his robe, shaves his head, and falls down to worship. Grief and worship share the same room. In these chapters the Hebrew word behind curse is actually bless. Job took the word back and meant it.

Job 1:1-2:10

Talk talk it through.

  1. Job never got to read chapter 1. How does knowing that the reader sees what the sufferer never learns change the way you read the rest of his story?

  2. Satan's accusation was that Job only worshiped God for what God gave him. Where in your own life is your faith closest to a business arrangement rather than worship?

  3. Job grieved openly and worshiped at the same time. Why do we assume those two cannot share a room, and what does that assumption cost us?

  4. Job asks whether we should accept only good from God and not adversity. What would have to change for you to answer that question the way he did?

Do respond this week.

  1. Pray

    Open your notes app and name your storm in one or two words. Write WHO underneath it. Every time the why starts screaming this week, pray to the WHO.

  2. Praise

    Sing before the answer comes. Pick one song from Sunday and use it as your response in the moment you would rather demand an explanation from God.

  3. Preach

    Read Job 1:1-2:10 slowly on your own. Mark every place Job answers loss with worship, and notice what his theology holds onto when everything else is gone.

  4. Practice

    Join a ministry this week: Bible Group, Men's or Women's Bible Study, Prayer Group, or Mommy and Me. Worship like Job's is built long before the wind hits.

Close in Prayer

Father, You are the God who reigns over what we cannot see. We confess that we want the film, the explanation, the reason. Teach us to trust You when the transcript stays sealed. Thank You that Jesus stands in the throne room and speaks our names. When our why goes unanswered, hold us steady in the Who. Blessed be Your name. Amen.
