Question

How are we ready for Christ's mission?

Start where the garage door comes down.

Watch your street tonight around six. A garage door goes up, a car disappears inside, the door comes down. We wave at the same man two hundred times and never learn his name. We live in garages with houses attached.

For three Sundays we have been down in the roots. But nobody plants a tree for the roots. Roots are the power supply, not the point. Rooted was always for Ready, and today the series turns.

Move how paul answers the question.

  1. Colossians 4:2–3

    Pray for opportunities

    Devote yourselves is the word for holding a rope and refusing to let go. Paul writes from prison and does not ask for release. He asks for a door into a conversation, and he asks God to open it. Mission starts on your knees, with a name on a prayer list.

  2. Colossians 4:4

    Prioritize the gospel

    Underline the word it. What goes through an open door is the mystery of Christ, not your opinions or your politics. Paul asked ordinary church members to pray he would say it clearly. Clarity is not a personality trait, it is an answered prayer. Keep the main thing the headline.

  3. Colossians 4:5–6

    Protect and persuade

    Making the most of the time is a market word. It means buy back the time before it is gone. We do not have a time problem, we have a purchasing problem. Then season your words with salt, because salt makes people thirsty. Answer each person, not a script.

Enduring Truth

You will never be ready for mission until you are ready toshare your story.

Colossians 4:2–6

Talk talk it through together.

  1. Who is the person you have waved at a hundred times but never really met? What has kept that door closed?

  2. Paul asked for an open door instead of an open cell. What does that request show about what he treasured? What would that prayer sound like in your week?

  3. Where do your gospel conversations usually drift, into politics, into arguments, into opinions? What would it take to steer one back to Jesus?

  4. Read John 9:25. The healed man could not answer the experts, but he knew what had happened to him. What is your version of that sentence?

Do take one step this week.

  1. Pray

    Write down one name today, someone far from God, and pray every day this week that God would open a door. Drop that name at the Hub and we will pray with you.

  2. Praise

    Thank God for whoever once watched for a door into your life and kept praying until it opened. Thank Him that the biggest door was torn open from His side.

  3. Preach

    Read Colossians 4:2–6 slowly this week and write down what Paul says goes through an open door. Ask God for the clarity Paul asked others to pray for.

  4. Practice

    Buy back one hour for the name on your list. A driveway conversation, a dinner table, a Saturday morning. Then get trained for the moment God answers.

Close in Prayer

Father, You did not wait behind a closed door for us. You sent Your Son through every door we slammed, and tore the curtain from the top so we could come in. Make us stubborn in prayer and clear in speech. Open doors we could never force. Help us tell what You have done, not to earn a place, but because we cannot stop talking about the family that took us in. Amen.
