The (Not-so) Secret Path to Hidden Treasure

Job 28 · Week 8

And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

Job 28:28

The Big
Question

Where can true wisdom be found, and what does it cost?

get started.

Imagine a room full of the world's brightest minds, or its richest people. There could be enormous knowledge and trillions of dollars, yet not an ounce of wisdom if none of them fear God.

Job's friends have finished their speeches, and Job now turns his attention to God. After so many attempts to explain his suffering, he fixes his eyes on the wisdom of God.

dig deeper.

  1. Job 28:1-11

    Man's competence falls short

Man will risk his life to mine silver, gold, and gems in dark places no falcon or lion can reach. Humanity has come far, sending subs to ocean depths and rockets to space. Yet all that competence cannot find the greatest treasure: wisdom.

  2. Job 28:12-19

The world's riches cannot buy it

Wisdom is not found in the land of the living, and the deep and the sea say it is not with them. No gold, onyx, sapphire, or pearls can buy it. Even if man gained every treasure on earth, it could not purchase an ounce of wisdom.

  3. Job 28:20-28

God openly declares where to find it

Only God understands the way to wisdom, and He declares it: the fear of the Lord is wisdom, and to turn from evil is understanding. In Christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom, and the cross that looks like folly to the world is God's wisdom.

Enduring Truth

Wisdom cannot be mined or bought; it begins withthe fear of the Lordand finds its fullest expression in Christ.

Group Discussion & Response

Job 28

talk it over.

  1. On Sunday we talked about a room of brilliant minds and a room of billionaires with no wisdom if they do not fear God. Why is it so easy to confuse knowledge and wealth with wisdom?

  2. People will risk a great deal for treasure, like the miners in Job 28. What do you pursue with that kind of energy, and where does the pursuit of wisdom rank?

  3. Job feared God and turned from evil even in the middle of suffering. What does fearing the Lord look like in your everyday decisions?

  4. The world sees the cross as foolishness, but Paul calls Christ the wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:24). How would you explain that to a friend?

respond this week.

  1. Pray

Ask God for wisdom this week, admitting you cannot find it on your own, and ask Him to help you fear Him and turn from evil.

  2. Praise

Praise God that wisdom is not hidden from those who seek Him, and that Christ is the power and wisdom of God.

  3. Preach

Remind yourself this week that wisdom cannot be mined or bought, but begins with the fear of the Lord.

  4. Practice

Choose one area where you are leaning on your own knowledge or riches, and bring it to Christ with a heart to obey Him.

Close in Prayer

Father, we cannot find wisdom by our own skill, and no riches can buy it. Thank You that You have openly declared the path to it: the fear of the Lord, and turning away from evil. Thank You for Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom. Teach us to walk in Your wisdom each day. In Jesus' name, Amen.
