How Can a Person Be Justified Before God?

Job 8-10 · Week 4

Truly I know that it is so: buthow can a person be justified before God?

Job 9:2

The Big
Question

How can a guilty sinner be made right with a just and holy God?

get started.

Every human being has a desire for justice, and it comes from God, who is a God of justice and made us in His image. But we have sinned, and since God is just, sin must be punished.

So how can a guilty sinner be made right with God? Bildad and Job give two very different answers, and a small clue in Job's brokenness points us straight to Christ.

dig deeper.

  1. Job 8

    Bildad's flawed view

Bildad says if Job is pure and upright, God will restore him, so the suffering must mean Job and his children sinned. But God declared Job upright, so Bildad's view makes an innocent sufferer proof that God is unjust. That is why it is flawed and dangerous.

  2. Job 9-10

    Job's sobering view

Job knows no amount of washing, even with lye, can make him clean before a God he cannot take to court. He is right: good works do not remove guilt. A fugitive who spends years doing kind deeds is still guilty until justice is served.

  3. Job 9:33

    A mediator is needed

Job says there is no mediator, yet he rightly feels he needs one. Christ is that Mediator. At the cross He is both just, declaring us guilty, and the justifier, paying our debt so that God sees His righteousness when we are in Him.

Enduring Truth

God declares guilty sinners righteous on the basis of Christ's righteousness, receivedthrough faith alone, not by our good works.

Group Discussion & Response

Job 8-10

talk it over.

  1. Growing up in church, having Christian parents, or doing good deeds doesn't take care of your sin problem. Why is it so easy to assume those things make us right with God?

  2. Sometimes we think that giving, serving, and attending church should make life easier. What does Job teach us about why that expectation doesn't hold up?

  3. On Sunday we compared trying to be justified by good deeds to a fugitive who becomes the nicest neighbor but is still guilty. Why can't good works clear our guilt before God?

  4. Romans 3:26 says God is both just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. How does the cross point to God being both, and what does it mean to be found in Christ?

respond this week.

  1. Pray

Thank God that you do not have to earn your standing before Him, and ask Him to help you rest in Christ's righteousness instead of your own record.

  2. Praise

Praise Jesus for being the Mediator Job longed for, who paid your sin debt so that justice has been done and you can be with Him forever.

  3. Preach

Remind yourself this week that you are justified by faith alone, not by your good works, and share that good news with someone.

  4. Practice

Examine yourself this week, confessing any sin to the Lord, and notice where you are trying to earn God's approval through performance.

Close in Prayer

Father, we confess that we cannot make ourselves right before You, no matter how many good deeds we do. Thank You for sending Jesus, the Mediator Job longed for, who paid our debt and clothed us in His righteousness. Help us to rest in Him alone, and remind us that after we have suffered a little while, You will restore and strengthen us. In Jesus' name, Amen.
